Members Present: John Keys, Diana Broyles, Natalie Rogen, and Brian Solarek
Members Absent: Julia Stafford, Abigail Bair, and Rachel Buck
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: John Keys called the meeting to order at 10:34 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve the September minutes was made by Brian Solarek and seconded by Diana Broyles. Motion passed
unanimously.
Friend's Report
The Star Wars Reads Day event was a huge success, with 1,144 in attendance. Junior League members were pleased with the
turnout and would like to support the event again next year. A game wheel at the event drew attention to the Friends table.
Other ways in which to increase membership are being discussed with staff.
Attendance at the first Virtual Genealogy program was small but steady. One of the attendees gave a generous donation to
the Friends.The funds will be used for teen programs. La Musica del Sur De Tejas\Music of South Texas Symposium had 140 in
attendance.
The Children's Book Festival will be held at La Retama Central on April 9. Rosemary Wells will be the featured author.
Director's Report
The Children's Book Festival, sponsored by the Friends, will be held on April 9 in partnership with the Junior League and
Success by Six. Another possible author for the festival is Kelly Bennett. A grant will be submitted to fund part of the festival
expenses.
Sue Stanford's family would like to extend the marionette program, which is held at Neyland in honor of Sue,to La Retama.
The family was informed that a marionette program will be held during the Children's Book Festival and they have agreed to
fund three performances.
On December 19 at La Retama Central Library a Yule Ball, based on Harry Potter,will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the
program is geared towards teens. Other holiday theme programs will be held at each library location.
The Food Bank Board of Directors approved providing meals at La Retama Central Library during the afterschool programs.
However, other required grant documents still need to be completed and approved before the meals can start.
Steps have been taken to have signage placed outside La Musica del Sur de Tejas\Music of South Texas gallery in order to give
the gallery more visibility. Besides the annual symposium staff is working on other programs to promote the gallery.
New Business
Board reappointments are scheduled to go before City Council on November 10, if they are not considered on that date
members can continue to serve. Mr. Keys suggested appointing a committee next month to work on the annual report. Mrs.
Garcia will email last year's annual report to the Board.
Motion to excuse Julia Stafford,Abigail Bair and Rachel Buck from today's meeting was made by Natalie Rogen and seconded
by Diana Broyles. Motion passed unanimously.
