HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 03/01/2016 Library Board Meeting Minutes March 1, 2016 Members Present: Julia Stafford, Brian Solarek, Diana Broyles, Rachel Buck,Juanita Hernandez, Natalie Rogen, Leanne Libby, and Harris Worchel Members Absent: Abigail Bair Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary Call to Order: Julia Stafford called the meeting to order at 10:31 a.m. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the February minutes was made by Brian Solarek and seconded by Harris Worchel. Motion passed unanimously. New Board Members Mrs. Stafford introduced Leanne Libby. Friend's Report Mrs. Rogen reported that renewal membership letters will be mailed this week. The Teen Bookfest at Tuloso Midway High School was a success and there were approximately 440 attendees. The Friends received a $5,000 donation from an anonymous donor. The Children's Book Festival will be on April 9,from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at La Retama Central Library,with authors Rosemary Wells and Kelly Bennett.There will also be various community partners such as Success by Six, the Junior League and Wells Fargo that will have activities. Afterwards at 4 p.m. a meet and greet with the authors will be held as part of the Annual Friends meeting. Director's Report Mrs. Garcia stated that the Teen Advisory Board (TBA)will be establish and staff are encouraging teens to fill out an application to join the TBA. The teens will be from across the city and all types of school environments private, public and homeschool. During April the Pet Drive will be held. Overdue library fines will be waived if individuals donate pet related items such as food, shampoos, collars, bowls and so forth. McDonald Library will host the Cattery mobile clinic which will have a Spay/Neuter day on March 29. On April 23 the Cattery will do a low cost vaccination day; Gulf Coast Humane Society will have humane education activities, books and literature for adults and children. The Corpus Christi Animal Care Services will answer questions about City pet ordinances and have a small adoption event,fees will be waived for the adoptions. The Summer Reading Programs will be expanding to Teen Programs. The library will be partnering with the Foster Grandparents group to get individuals to help with the Summer Reading Program. Staff is working towards the Zero Base budget. Mr. Worchel suggested to look into ALA indicators or calculators because it will show that if there is no library services, it will start in the negative due to the impact in the community. Mrs. Garcia stated that the process has just started and all budget updates will be reported. Services at La Retama Library are going well. The MEND program is doing well. The Easter Hunt program will be on March 19. New Business Motion to excuse Rachel Buck from last month's meeting and Abigail Bair from today's meeting was made by Diana Broyles and seconded by Brian Solarek. Motion passed unanimously.
