April 5, 2016

Members Absent: Julia Stafford
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Brian Solarek called the meeting to order at 10:37 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve the March minutes was made by Rachel Buck and seconded by Diana Broyles. Motion passed unanimously.
Friend's Report
The Children's Book Festival will be on April 9,from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at La Retama Central Library,with authors Rosemary
Wells and Kelly Bennett. The Annual Friends meeting will be at 4 p.m.
Ten people responded to the membership renewal letters mailed out last month. Natalie Rogen stated that memberships are
important because memberships fund the library programs.
Mrs. Garcia stated that most of the grants that have been awarded to the Library are through the Friends. One of the
requirements of these grants is that the organization be a 501c3, non-profit organization.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia stated that a new feature of the Children's Book Festival is the marionette show by the Carranza Puppeteers. This
year Children's Book Festival is in memory of Louise Dinn and the marionette show in memory of Sue Stafford.
The April Pet Drive will benefit the Cattery, Gulf Coast Humane Society and the Corpus Christi Animal Services Department.
Patrons' overdue fines will be waived when they donate pet food or pet related items such as shampoo, collars, etc. A Pet
Vaccination clinic will be held at McDonald Library on April 23.
Last year we received notification that an Oral History grant from Humanities Texas was not awarded; however, last week we
received information to the contrary.The grant has been awarded at a reduced level of$3,500.
Next month a grant application will be submitted to the Coastal Bend Community Foundation requesting funds to develop the
Teen area at La Retama Central Library.
The Summer Reading (SR) programs will start in June and will include programing for teens.
An afterhours Great Gatsby program for teens is being planned for August at La Retama Central Library.
The Library Foundation has committed $50,000 to the Library's Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project. The Foundation
and Friends will work on a fund raising campaign.
Julia Stafford is most likely taking a position out of town requiring her to resign her Library Board position. Staff will report
further updates.
New Business
Motion to excuse Julia Stafford from today's meeting was made by Natalie Rogen and seconded by Diana Broyles. Motion
passed unanimously.
