Members Present: Brian Solarek, Diana Broyles,Juanita Hernandez, Natalie Rogen, Leanne Libby, and Harris Worchel
Members Absent: Abigail Bair and Rachel Buck
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Brian Solarek called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve the April minutes was made by Leanne Libby and seconded by Diana Broyles. Motion passed unanimously.
Friend's Report
There were approximately 1,400 at the April 91"Children's Book Festival. Junior League volunteers handled the author book
sale for the Friends. Donated books were sold by the Friends for$1, close to $100 was sold. The Summer Reading Club (SRC)
program, ages 0-12, sponsored by the Friends, starts June 6. The SRC program for tweens\teens continues to be expanded and
this year it will be offered at four locations. Promotional material will be distributed throughout the community starting next
week.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia provided SRC brochures to the Board. This is the second year that Christus Health Plan sponsors the canvas bags
distributed as part of the SRC, a value of$3,000. Staff is evaluating how SRC participant statistics are gathered in order to
make changes next year. Mrs. Garcia provided new members information on the Family Place grant,which will be
implemented at McDonald Library within the coming year. Family Place emphasizes child development and early literacy
through play. Libraries offering Family Place programs make the library a welcoming environment for families.The program is
designed to emphasize the important role parent's play in their child's development and connects them to community services
and resources.
The Cattery mobile clinic had a record breaking vaccination day at McDonald Library on April 23, 51 were vaccinated,the
previous record was 44. The mobile clinic will be at Neyland Library on May 18 and 19. Mr. Worchel stated that this benefits
the library and shows good will.
The City will probably implement a hiring freeze which will require vacant positions to remain vacant until the start of the new
fiscal year,which is in October. The Library has several vacancies and a managing position will be vacated in the coming
month.
New Business
Motion to excuse Abigail Bair and Rachel Buck from today's meeting was made by Natalie Rogen and seconded by Harris
Worchel. Motion passed unanimously.
