HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 10/04/2016 Library Board Meeting Minutes October 4, 2016 Members Present: Brian Solarek, Candace Hart,Juanita Hernandez,Jane Kratzig, Leanne Libby, Alice Nixon, Harris Worchel and Natalie Rogen. Members Absent: Abigail Bair and Leanne Libby. Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director,Jay Ellington, Assistant City Manager Call to Order: Brian Solarek called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the September minutes was made by Alice Nixon with the following correction, in the Public Comment section: He suggested to emphasize the impact RFID would have on efficiencies. Motion was seconded by Jane Kratzig. Motion passed unanimously. Brian Solarek introduced Candace Hart who provided a brief bio including that she is a retired high school librarian. Friend's Report Mrs. Garcia reported that Michael Salgado a prominent Tejano singer/accordionist will be the inductee at the annual Musica del Sur de Tejas/Music of South Texas event, October 16 at McDonald Library. Humanities Texas awarded $1,000 for the Czech exhibit. Community donations of$1,850 for the exhibit and programming has been received. The exhibit is scheduled to be setup on October 8. The Star Wars Reads event will be on October 15 at La Retama Central Library. The Corpus Christi Library Foundation has pledged $50,000 towards the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). An additional $20,000 for the project was received from Amanda and Ken Kellar, owners of Corpus Christi Electric Company. Director's Report The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten project will be launched at the Star Wars Reads event. A 1000 Books reading journal will be given to those who register. One of the requirements will be that either the parent or child have a library card. The goal is to register 1000 children. Programming will be developed to encourage participation. A Veteran's Fair will be hosted at La Retama Central Library on November 11 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Corpus Christi Veteran's Band will perform at 4 p.m. Promotional items have been purchased and will be distributed during library events. The library budget was adopted as presented and only one position will be frozen this coming fiscal year. The current vacant positions will be restructured to improve services. Mrs. Garcia distributed copies of the 2016 library board minutes to assist the board in preparing the annual report, due in January. New Business None. Public Comment Mr. Ellington reported that the city will begin the zero base budget process for the coming fiscal year. Mr. Ellington asked the board to exercise their right to educate the community about the library services and advocate to city council, city leaders and other city groups on behave of the library.
