HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 03/05/2019 Library Board Minutes March 5, 2019 Members Present: Brian Solarek,Alice Nixon, Nicole Carroll, Candace Hart, Ida Hobbs,Tom Krepel,Vickie Natale and Julie Rogers Members Absent: None Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary. Call to Order: Brian Solarek called the meeting to order at 10:33 AM. Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Nicole Carroll to approve the minutes with the following change: The funds will be used to develop a community garden at Hopkins Library. Motion was seconded by Vickie Natale. Motion passed unanimously. Friends Report/Director's Report The Friends Board recommended someone for the Library board. Friends approved $9,000 for the Summer Reading Programs at all library locations. The Friends covered the cost of the American Bank Center where the Teen Bookfest by the Bay took place, attendance was approximately 900 students. An area for a Makerspace is being developed on the first floor of La Retama Central Library. The area will be used to provide workshops\classes as well as make a wide range of technologies available;from sewing machines to 3D printer technology. Funding for these resources is being provided by the Library Foundation. The Comic Book Fair that was held March 2 in partnership with the Junior League had approximately 482 in attendance. Mrs. Garcia reported on other upcoming programs that are published in the Library's Spring 2019 brochure. Laura Garcia shared a video distributed to Council members by a Girl Scout group in which they request that the Harte Library hours be restored. She stated that individuals have been voicing their concerns regarding the Harte hours during public comment. Mrs. Garcia provided the Board a brief overview of staffing for each location and information regarding what lead to the reduced hours at Harte in November 2017. Several Board members stated that the 2018 Annual Report submitted by the Board clearly showed the need for increased staffing and funding for the Library. Board members were invited to the Radio-frequency identification (RFID) presentation and equipment demonstration that is scheduled at La Retama Central Library on March 21 at 2 p.m. New Business Brian Solarek introduced Ida Hobbs who was appointed last month. Mr. Solarek announced that this would be his last meeting as he has accepted a position out of state. Tom Krepel made a motion that the Library Board Chair be elected at the April meeting. Motion was seconded by Alice Nixon. Motion passed unanimously. Mr. Krepel stated he would like for somebody else to take the lead on the 2019 Annual Board report. Public Comment None. Nicole Carroll made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Candace Harte seconded. Meeting adjourned at 11:47 a.m.
