April 2, 2019
Members Present: Alice Nixon, Nicole Carroll, Candace Hart, Ida Hobbs,Tom Krepel,Vickie Natale,Julie Rogers and
Roberta Sewell
Members Absent: None
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary.
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:35 AM.
Board Chair Appointment/Election
Tom Krepel made a motion and it was seconded by Vickie Natale to elect Alice Nixon for Library Board Chair. Motion
passed unanimously. Alice Nixon made a motion and it was seconded by Nicole Carroll to elect Candace Hart for Vice-
Chair. Motion passed unanimously.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Vickie Natale and seconded by Ida Hobbs to approve the minutes with the following changes: The
Comic Book Fair held March 2 in partnership with the Junior League had approximately 983 in attendance. Nicole Carroll
made the motion to adjourn the March meeting, Candace Hart seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
Friends/Director's Report
Laura Garcia stated that the Success by 6 proclamation will be presented on April 9 at the City Council meeting,which
starts at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Mrs. Garcia reported on upcoming programs.
Roberta Sewell stated that Friends membership has decreased. She suggested reviving the Friends newsletter to inform
the community of how they support the Library. She distributed the Spring brochure and reported on Library programs
sponsored by Friends.
Mrs. Garcia reported that the CCPL Foundation issued a check for$28,000 to the Friends for the following:Teen
Bookfest, McDonald Library,Teen area at La Retama Central and purchase of technology equipment.
Interest in the Career Online High School (COHS) program has increased as a result of a news pieced by KRIS, Channel 6.
Additional funding will be needed to add approximately 15 more scholarships.
Mrs. Garcia demonstrated the new library website which will be transitioning to the City's website. She asked the Board
to review the site and provide feedback.
Board members were invited to the Radio-frequency identification (RFID) presentation and equipment demonstration
which was scheduled for after the Library Board meeting.
New Business
Julie Rogers stated she would like to facilitate the Annual Report Sub-Committee. Tom Krepal agreed to be part of it but
would like for someone else to write the report. Ida Hobbs and Alice Nixon will also be in sub-committee.
Julie Rogers stated the Friends will apply for the Texas State Library&Archive Commission - Read Across Texas grant.
The book that has been selected is Dreamers by Yuyi Morales. She stated that the book will be introduced by the
nonprofit organization Raices-during an informational program that they will offer at La Retama Central.
