Members Present: Alice Nixon, Nicole Carroll, Candace Hart, Ida Hobbs,Tom Krepel,Vickie Natale,Julie Rogers and

Members Absent: None
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary.
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:31 AM.
Alice Nixon congratulated Library Director, Laura Garcia,who will receive the Daniel E. Kilgore Award this evening,from
the Nueces County Historical Society.
Approval of Minutes
A motion to approve the minutes as presented was made by Candace Hart and seconded by Roberta Sewell. Motion
passed unanimously.
Friends Report
Roberta Sewell reported that Treva Bedwell will be the new Treasurer for the Friends.
An announcement was made of the Library program,Soaring with Dinosaurs, during the Success by 6 proclamation at
the City Council meeting. There were children from the Bethune Day Care Center that walked in wearing dinosaur
masks. The program was held the following Saturday at La Retama Central Library. There were approximately 1149 in
attendance.
Stephanie Juarez, Emerging Technology Librarian, and Sharon Hines were introduced at the Friends meeting. Ms.Juarez
will be working on library technology-oriented projects including the Makerspace. Mrs. Hines is the new Friends board
member.
Julie Rogers distributed the flyer for the first Read Across Texas program that will be at La Retama Central Library on
May 11 at 10 a.m. The book, Dreamers by Yuyi Morales will be added to the Library's collection,three are in Spanish.
One will be at La Retama Central and two will be at McDonald Library.
Director's Report
A YouTube video prepared by Del Mar College during the "Soaring with Dinosaurs"Week of the Young Child event was
shown. Several partners were interviewed including TX A&M, Del Mar College and United Way Success by Six. The
video highlighted the importance of hosting this type of community event,which focuses on early childhood
development, at a venue such as La Retama Central Library. Attendance was 1,149.
The Summer brochure,which features the Summer Reading theme "A Universe of Stories",was distributed.
Due to the new Buccaneer Parade route, coming within a block of La Retama Central,the popular"May the Fourth"
program scheduled that evening was canceled. However,the Chess tournament, which had over 52 participants,was
still held.
The CCPL Foundation funded 15 additional Career on-line High School (COHS) scholarships. The additional scholarships
will allow us to begin the process of qualifying students that are on the waiting list. Since, students can transfer credits
into the program we are confident that we will have a graduating class by the end of the year. This program is really
making a difference in the life of many individuals.
Harte Library hours will increase by 10.5 effective June 3. A temporary full-time Library Assistant is being hired to assist
during the summer. However, a Library Assistant resigned and will not be filled by June 3rd.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Nicole Carroll and Vickie Natale seconded. Meeting adjourned at 11:20
a.m.
