August 6, 2019
Members Present: Alice Nixon, Nicole Carroll,Tom Krepel,Vickie Natale,Julie Rogers and Roberta Sewell
Members Absent: Candace Hart and Ida Hobbs
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary.
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:33 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
A motion to approve the minutes as presented was made by Nicole Carroll and seconded by Roberta Sewell. Motion
passed unanimously.
Friends Report
Roberta Sewell presented a draft of the Friends newsletter that includes the membership list. The cost to print the
newsletter(approximately 150 copies)will be$68. Tom Krepel suggested having a business or corporation membership
category. Mrs. Sewell requested names of businesses and individuals that might be interested in receiving the newsletter.
Director's Report
Staff issued 48 library cards and registered six children in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Club at Operation Safe
Return. Staff will be at Borchard Fairgrounds on August 10 for Petey's Back to School from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at KEDT
studio on August 17 for KEDT Kids Festival,from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Luau will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at La Retama
Central on August 17.
McDonald Library remains closed due to issues with the HVAC unit.
The following Purposed Budget Public Meetings will be held from 6 p.m.—7 p.m.: District 1 at Hopkins Library on August
12, District 2 at Lindale Senior Center on August 15, District 3 at McDonald Library on August 14, District 4 at Ethel Everly
Senior Center on August 19, and District 5 at Garcia Library on August 22. The Library Budget Workshop will be August 29
at 9 a.m. in the Council Chambers. Adding a Library Assistant position at the Harte Library, in order to restore hours, is
being requested. Alice will email Mr. Zanoni,the new City Manager,the Library Boards Annual Report.
Alice briefly discussed library master plans and their importance. Laura mentioned that including the Library in the Parks
and Recreation master plan is being discussed. Julie Rogers stated that increasing the Library professional positions as well
as support staff is extremely important to better serve the community.
Old Business
Alice distributed a copy of the article written by Patty Nuss on the history of La Retama Club with CCPL and the Friends of
the Library. Alice will complete the accreditation document and will present it at next month's meeting. Julie Rogers
distributed the Draft Survey document. Vickie Natale suggested asking Parks and Rec what resources they used for the Cole
Park Pier Survey and how it was distributed. The Library Board Manual and Library Survey agenda will remain for further
discussion in next month's meeting.
New Business
The board agreed to have next month's meeting at Hopkins Library, 3202 McKinzie Road.
A motion to excuse Candace Hart and Ida Hobbs from today's meeting was made by Nicole Carroll and seconded by Julie
Rogers. Motion passed unanimously.
