HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 03/10/2003 • MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LJBRARIES MARCH 10, 2003 MEMBERS PRESENT: Yvonne Kylstra, Treva Bedwell,Margaret Moss, Patty Nuss, Dr. Thomas Cron,Reynaldo Rodriquez, Mary Ann McGregor, Dr. Waheed, and Friends President, Ken Kellar. STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Director of Libraries. Minutes from the February 11, 2003 meeting were approved as presented. Mrs. Kylstra called the meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. FRIENDS REPORT: 1. Mr. Kellar reported that the Ed Rachal Foundation has gifted $50,000 for the expansion and improvement of the children's area at the Central Library Building. 2. Mr. Kellar reported that Cotillion Alegre has gifted $1,000.00 to the Inez Sterling Adams South Texas Historical Gallery. The Friends of the Library will give an additional $1,100.00 needed to complete the Gallery. 3. March 25, 2003, at 1:45 p.m. the Mary Bell Proclamation will be read before the City Council. At 2:00 p.m. the Council will be presented with the following: 1. A Gift Agreement for the Children's Library 2. A Gift Agreement for the Zachary Taylor print 3. A Receipt of Bequest from the Porter estate of$55,000.00 4. Our South Texas Library System appointee, Treva Bedwell. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: 1. Mr. Canales reported that the Accessible Resource Center will be dedicated on March 31, 2003, at the Central Library. This Center which makes information available to those who have visual and hearing impairments was made possible by a$53,310.00 grant from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF). The Library Foundation provided an additional$5,500.00. SCANNED 2. Mr. Canales announced that on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, there will be a book signing at Texas A&M featuring several authors of children's books. This is in connection with the Children's Book Festival which begins May 1, at 8:00 a.m. at Del Mar College. The Corpus Christi Library System will receive 20%of the profits from book sales to be applied to next year's Children's Book Festival. Approximately 1,100— 1,200 books will be given away to children. 3. Mr. Canales reported that the Sarah Porter Estate has given$55,000.00 to the city to be appropriated to the Library Revenue Fund. Sarah Porter was a long time member and friend of the library system. OLD BUSINESS: Mr. Canales explained the budget process. He said that he has met with the city staff who have assured him that they will work with us on our budget to be sure the libraries are financially sound even though cuts are recommended.
