MINUTES
LIBRARY BOARD OF THE
CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES
April 8, 2003
MEMBERS PRESENT: Patty Nuss, Yvonne Kylstra, Dr. Thomas Cron, Reynaldo
Rodriquez, Margaret Moss, Charles Burnes, Treva Bedwell, and Mary Ann McGregor.
STAFF PRESENT: Laura Garcia, Public Service Manager of the Library System
Minutes from the March 11, 2003 meeting were approved as written.
Mrs. Kylstra called the meeting to order at 1:20 P.M.
STAFF REPORT:
Invitations have been sent to the opening of The Inez Sterling Adams Gallery to be held
April 27, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. Guest speaker will Dr. Bruce Winder, author of"Mr. Polk's
Army". The dedication will be held downstairs and refreshments will be served upstairs
in the conference room. The La Retama Club is providing all refreshments for the event.
We are working with Texas A&M to reevaluate our services, including investigating the
kinds of services for children that are offered in public libraries in major U S cities.
Representatives of The Junior League will be visiting with Herb Canales to explore the
possibility of providing volunteers for the children's summer reading programs.
The Children's Book Festival Signing Reception will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2003
from 3 —5:00 p.m. at Texas A&M in the Corpus Christi University Center. The
Children's Book Festival will be Thursday, May 1, 2003 from 8:30— 11:30 a.m. on the
East Campus of Del Mar College.
The Library has received a $10,000.00 literary grant from Scripps Howard.
Title 1 funds have made possible a program for children of migrant workers. Both
parents and children are invited to come on Thursday afternoons to hear storyteller,
Angela Davis. Ms. Davis, who is from Louisiana, promotes reading to children among
the migrant families. After reading, she presents little gifts to the children. A total of 721
have attended during four sessions.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
Ken Keller announced that newsletters have been sent to all members and to select other
individuals to solicit their membership.
OLD BUSINESS
SCANNED
Mrs. Klystra announced that the pictures for the Adams Gallery will be hung on April 22
by Dan Slatttery of the Art Institute of South Texas. Mr. Slattery is a certified art
installer. Barbara McDowell will assist.
NEW BUSINESS
Mrs. Klystra asked for three volunteers to form a Building Committee to begin work on
plans for remodeling the downtown children's library. Volunteers were Charles Bumes,
Yvonne Klystra, Treva Bedwell, and Patty Nuss.
The meeting adjourned at 1:35 p.m.
