MINUTES
LIBRARY BOARD OF THE
CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES
June 8,2004
MEMBERS PRESENT: Charles Burnes,Yvonne Kylstra,Mary Ann McGregor,
Margaret Moss,Rey Rodriguez, Barbara Silverman, Sue Stanford, Dr. Thomas Cron,and
Friends President, Ken Kellar
STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Director of Libraries;Dorothea Castanon,
Greenwood Branch Manager;and Lea Zapata, Management Assistant
Meeting was called to order by Yvonne Kylstra.
Mr. Canales introduced his new Management Assistant, Lea Hilzinger Zapata.
Minutes from the May 11,2004,meeting were approved.
BUILDING COMMITTEE:
1. Ms. Kylstra presented a report from the June 1,2004,Building Committee
meeting.
2. The carpet was discussed.
3. The committee has decided to keep the existing furniture and supplement with
compatible new furniture. Ramirez and Sons has been contacted to give a quote
on refinishing the existing furniture. Madeline Yochem will supply the committee
with choices for stacking chairs to match the existing Windsor chairs.
4. There will be six tables with folding legs which are 30x72 inches purchased at a
cost of$3168.00, and two trapezoid shaped computer stations with adjustable
height capabilities purchased at a cost of$338 each.
5. The shelving has not been decided on due to a delay in receiving a sample
extender. The committee is looking into the possibility of having the extenders
fabricated locally instead of buying them from the manufacturer.
6. The project will be bid in July.
FRIENDS REPORT:
1. Ken Kellar mentioned a meeting scheduled for June 9, 2004,with Herb Canales
and Joe Wilson of the Corpus Christi Literary Reading Series. Friends will be co-
sponsoring a year long reading series featuring the book, Corpus Christi: Stories,
by Bret Johnston.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
1. Mr. Canales introduced Ms. Dorothea Castanon, Greenwood Branch Library
Manager.
2. Ms. Castanon stated that L. A. Train from Swiff-Train Company looked at the
carpet and suggested carpet tiles would be best. Mr. Train stated that the problem

with the current carpet was due to the foundation and moisture problem which has
since been resolved. Currently caution tape is being used on the parts of the
carpet that is buckling. Swiff-Train should be turning in an estimate of the cost to
replace the carpeting soon.
3. Currently,there are eight reading initiatives in Corpus Christi through the
Libraries and other agencies. Greenwood Library was also the recipient of the
Scripps Howard Foundation Award and Friends of the Library which has enabled
them to establish two reading clubs.
4. Greenwood Library is also involved in the Rotary Club of Corpus Christi
Community Project No Baby Left Behind. This is a program where volunteers go
to 18 participating agencies to urge parents of children from 0 to 3 years to read to
their babies. Each parent receives a gift bag from the Rotary club with a growth
and development chart,HEB gift and coupons, and library coupon good for a free
picture of their baby and a free board book.
5. A number of suggestions were made to increase the number of parents and infants
involved in No Baby Left Behind. Mr. Canales suggested having a party with a
cake or cookies once a month to bring the parents and children into the library.
Mr. Kellar agreed to have the Friends pay for the cake. Also Mr. Canales
suggested Greenwood Library place a large poster mentioning the program to get
the parents entering the library to sign up.
6. After Ms. Castanon's presentation, the attendees walked through the library to see
the new section of the library built to accommodate mother's of babies and
toddlers and the carpet damage.
