LIBRARY BOARD OF THE
CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES December 14,2004
MEMBERS PRESENT: Yvonne Kylstra,Treva Bedwell,Barbara Silverman,Charles
Burnes, Dr. A.N. Waheeduzzaman, Sue Stanford,Mary Christmas
STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales,Library Director; Cynthia Tunches,Janet F. Harte
Public Library Manager; Elizabeth Ryberg,Children's Librarian; and Lea Zapata,
Management Assistant
Meeting was called to order by Yvonne Kylstra at 1:10 p.m.
Minutes from the November 14,2004,meeting were approved.
Yvonne Kylstra introduced Mary Christmas as the newest board member.
BUILDING COMMITTEE:
1. The opening of the Mary&Jeff Bell Children's Library has been delayed. The
opening has tentatively been rescheduled for March 6,2004.
2. They have proceeded with the artist for the end panels on the shelves
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
1. Mr. Canales introduced Cynthia Tunches,the new branch manager. Ms. Tunches
in turn introduced Elizabeth Ryberg,the new children's librarian.
2. An anonymous donor gave$10,000 to name the gallery after Noel McArdle. She
would like two or three pieces of art in the entryway. She will talk to Carolyn
Young to spearhead a committee to find the artwork.
3. Ms. Tunches reported that three leaks had been fixed with no further occurrences.
4. Mr. Canales reported that a year ago the library was named in a remainder trust by
William T.Neyland. The library will receive 25%of the Anita Neyland Trust.
She has recently passed away. The city council has approved for the library to
receive cash. The market value is between$500,000 and$600,000.
5. A motion was made by Barbara Silverman to have the fords allocated for
improvement at Parkdale. Treva Bedwell seconded the motion. All approved.
6. Charles Burnes made a motion to rename Parkdale to the William T.Neyland
Public Library. Mary Christmas seconded the motion. All approved.
7. Possible locations for the Southside library were discussed. Mr. Canales will
work with Ms. Christmas to see about doing a possible combined school/public
library.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Charles Burnes gave an update on the bookmobile. It has received a$1000
donation from Sam's Club. The first project is scheduled for February. The
partnership with Coca-Cola is going well. Other area businesses are being
contacted for possible contributions.

1. The January board meeting will be held at the Parkdale Branch Library.
