HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 03/13/2007 it 0 MINUTES RECEIVED LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES DEC 0 5 2008 March 13, 2007 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas, Laney Cone, Barbara Silverman, Rey Rodriguez, Sue Stanford, Andrea Naismith, Lucy McCracken, and Ken Kellar, Friends President. STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Library Director and Lea Zapata,Management Assistant Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:15 p.m. Minutes from the February 13,2007 meeting were approved. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. There are eight birds left for the Northwest project. Over$20,000 has been raised for the 8' x 8' bird watching map. There are 44 on the host committee for the May fundraiser for the Clif Moss Nature Education Center. The mayor has been invited to attend. There will be a silent auction including a quilt,books, and a guided tour. 2. Friends' has had discussion with Valero to discuss support for projects. We need to do a grant request that has to do with children to get some of the money from the major golf tournament they hold annually. 3. CC Reads is going to apply to the National Endowment for the Arts for a matching$5,000 grant. We would have to commit to doing ten programs in one month. The novel that has been chosen is Bless Me, Ultima. Ms. Christmas suggested that the Library Board and CC Reads send a formal letter to the superintendents of local schools to have their seniors and fine arts classes study the book. 4. A motion was made by Ms. Silverman to write a letter to the superintendents of local school districts to invite them to participate in CC Reads. Ms. Naismith seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: 1. The Northwest Branch Library project is still scheduled for completion this summer. The Clif Moss Nature Education Center is scheduled to open in the fall. 2. The Parkdale Building Committee has a meeting today at 2 p.m. Ms. Silverman will be the voting member on the public art panel. The architect still believes it can be open by this time next year. We have about $1 million, and we should receive another$20,000 in interest before construction starts. John Dykema does not believe we can use the public art funds to restore the old reliefs. He thinks the money can only be used to create new art. There is still a$60,000 contingency that may be available afterwards for the restorations. 3. The Southside Library is still on track to open before the 2008-2009 school year begins. Ms. McCracken will be the Library Board representative on the public art panel. SCANNED 0 V 4. They have put in nice carpeting in the Greenwood Branch Library. There is ample room with 13,000 square feet. We may try to keep the building and fix some of the structural problems. 5. May 3, 2009, will be the library's centennial. We need to think about a blue ribbon celebration. We will have the three big projects completed. 6. We are in the budget cycle for next year. We are requesting an exceptional item of $500,000 for books for the Southside library and staff for the tail end of the 2007- 2008 fiscal year. We will need to have a managing librarian and children's librarian four months before and the rest of the staff one month before opening. All the interests from the NEH money, approximately$40,000 will go to Southside. 7. The Children's Book Festival will be held on April 20, 2007. It focuses on 4-year- olds. Invitations will be sent to school districts. There will be visiting authors and a music tent. There will be a book signing reception on April 19, 2007, at the future site of the Southside Library. OLD BUSINESS: 1. None. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Ms. Christmas will talk to the Corpus Christi Independent School District press office about placing the Southside rendering on the billboards around the city. The groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for June 5. 2. Ms. McCracken made a motion to request that we work with CCISD to use the artist's rendering of the Southside Library as a billboard this summer. Ms. Naismith seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. 3. The April meeting will be held at the Greenwood Branch Library. Possible renovations for Greenwood will be discussed. The meeting adjourned at 2:04 p.m.
