HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 05/08/2007 it *10 MINUTES RECEIVED LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES DEC 0 5 2008 May 8,2007 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas, Joyce Green, Janey Cone, Barbara Silverman,Rey Rodriguez, Sue Stanford, Lucy McCracken,Andrea Naismith, and Ken Kellar, Friends President. STAFF PRESENT: Laura Garcia, Public Services Manager and Lea Zapata, Management Assistant Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:16 p.m. Andrea Naismith made a motion to approve the minutes from the April 10, 2007, meeting with revisions. Joyce Green seconded the motion and it was approved by all. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. The Northwest Branch has received a donation from CITGO for$10,000 to be given over two years for computers and programs for the center and children. We have come close to $70,000 to $80,000 received in total. The May 6 fundraiser for the Clif Moss Nature Education Center met the goal of$50,000 raised. We have also been contacted by Texas A&M to possibly receive an exhibit of mammoth bones and information on what it was like in this area 11,000 years ago. 2. Greenwood projects are under discussion. 3. Friends is planning on having a week-long program covering the National Seashore next year at the Janet F. Harte Library. This will be open to all schools. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: 1. They are still working on getting the bids together for both the Southside and Parkdale projects. 2. The dedication for Northwest should be at the end of August or early September. The dedication of the Clif Moss Nature Education Center will be approximately two months after that. 3. The Summer Reading Program will kick off on May 29, 2007 and will run through mid-July. The Central Library is planning on doing a story time for the special needs population in the community on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. We have been contacted by both London Independent School District and the state school. The new Central Library's Children Librarian Marissa Lopresti will be heading up the program. 4. Next week will be the Scholastic Book Fair in La Retama Room from May 16, 2007, to May 20, 2007. 5. On May 20, 2007, at 3 p.m. we will have an author visit in Local History. The author is C J Handler, and her book is The Rumor of Heaven. As part of the lecture/presentation on Historical Texas and Hurricanes, attendees will have a chance to view images of regional Texas photos from the year 1900. SCANNED • • 41111 110 OLD BUSINESS: 1. There has been no response yet on the application submitted for the NEA matching grant"The Big Read" for CC Reads. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Lucy McCracken made a motion to designate the City Secretary as the Public Information Coordinator consistent with state law. Andrea Naismith seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. The meeting adjourned at 1:43 p.m.
