HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 11/13/2007 MINUTES RECEIVED LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES DEC 0 5R2;0 2008 November 13, 2007 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas, Janey Cone, Sue Stanford, Barbara Silverman, Andrea Naismith, and Lucy McCracken STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Library Director and Lea Zapata, Management Assistant Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:15 p.m. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. The membership drive is underway. 2. The Clif Moss Nature Education Center's dedication is being sponsored by Friends and underwritten by Ed Hicks Imports, Ltd. It is set for Sunday, February 24, 2008. David Allen Sibley will be the guest speaker. 3. Friends has received$5000 from Flint Hills as the first payment of two for the Moss Education Center. 4. The Big Read has just concluded. Coles High School held an event. There were around 15 book groups discussing Bless Me, Ultima. Data is currently being collected to report back to the National Endowment for the Arts. A decision will be made in January on whether or not to reapply for next year. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS: 1. The Southside groundbreaking was on November 19, 2007. We are hoping for completion by next October,but technically, the contractor has until around next Thanksgiving. 2. The construction contract for Parkdale has been awarded to Van Fleet out of Kingsville. As of this week, all the contracts have been signed. There will be a pre-construction meeting before Thanksgiving. This is estimated to be a 6-to 7- month project. The building committee will need to meet in January with Dykema Architects Inc. to discuss furniture. The bridge,parking lot overly and landscaping was not included in the bid. Last month, Ricardo Ruiz was chosen to do a mural to be placed above the computers. 3. The planning process for the 2008 bond proposals starts soon. Greenwood Branch Library is in the process. It needs to be for 5 million dollars rather than 4 million dollars due to price increases. The branch is in a good location. 4. We have started the registration process for use of the computers which is the program the Ken and Amanda Kellar purchased for the Corpus Christi Public Libraries. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Lucy McCracken,Andrea Naismith, and Barbara Silverman have all requested to be reappointed for another term on the Library Board. 2. The board currently has 2 vacancies to fill and no applications on file at City Hall. SCANNED Iso v/1 3. Barbara Silverman, Andrea Naismith, and Taney Cone have agreed to be the nominating committee for chair and co-chair positions. 4. Sue Stanford declined the invitation to be on the Southside Building Committee. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Based on past history, the Library Board will continue to not have a December meeting. January's meeting will be held at the Parkdale Branch Library. The meeting adjourned at 2:08 p.m.
