HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 01/08/2008 MINUTES RECEIVED 41110 LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES DEC 0 5 2008 January 8, 2008 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas, Janey Cone, Sue Stanford, Andrea Naismith, Lucy McCracken, and Sam Beecroft STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Library Director; Michelle Balis, Parkdale Managing Librarian; and Lea Zapata, Management Assistant Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:22 p.m. Janey Cone made a motion to accept the November 13,2007,minutes with corrections. Lucy McCracken seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS: 1. The invitations for the Parkdale Branch Library groundbreaking and the news release have gone out. Friends of Corpus Christi Public Libraries will make Ben McDonald,the mayor during the opening of Parkdale, an honorary life member. Parkdale currently has $75,000 budgeted for furniture. 2. The invitation to the Clif Moss Education Center opening is being printed. Fifty- one invitations will be hand delivered to those who purchased a bird on Dinah Bowman's map. 3. We do not know the timeframe for the 2008 bond election. Previously bond elections have run concurrent with the general election. We are looking into whether or not the Greenwood Branch Library is fixable and expandable. We are hoping for a$5 million bond to expand Greenwood to approximately 4000 square feet. 4. We received $25,000 from Beverley Wallace and family for the Southside Library. It is yet to be decided what will be purchased with the donation to go with the marine science theme. OLD BUSINESS: 1. We still have 2 vacancies for the Library Board, and there are no current applications on file. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Corpus Christi Reads will once again apply for The Big Read in February. The book chosen for this year is The Maltese Falcon. 2. Lucy McCracken made a motion to excuse Dr. Waheeduzzaman from today's proceedings due to illness. Sam Beecroft seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. The Library Board went on a tour of the Parkdale Branch Library. SCANNED
