FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY:
1. The Clif Moss Nature Education Center's dedication is being sponsored by
Friends and underwritten by Ed Hicks Imports, Ltd. It is set for Sunday, February
24, 2008. David Allen Sibley will be the guest speaker. An interview with Mr.
Sibley will be recorded on February 20 and will be aired on February 21.
DIRECTOR'S REPORTS:
1. The Southside building committee met over furnishings. The money for the
furnishings and telecommunications equipment. We started with$85,000 but the
amount needed was closer to $200,000. I believe we have a little bit more with
accrued interest. There is $160,000 for furniture and $35,000 for phones and
cabling. The architect said we have 6 weeks to work it out. We want to have 75 to
80%shelving capacity without bond funds for books. Unofficially, there has been
a delay with the steel so the project will not be getting completed until maybe
January 2009.
2. The Public Art Committee for Southside met on January 4,2008,to review 6 or 7
submissions. Two artists were chosen to submit concrete proposals in 30 days.
They will meet on February 22, 2008. There were two other submissions that got
misplaced. It was elected to look at exterior art for around $32,000 for the public
art.
3. The Parkdale foundation was poured last week. The budget is wholly privately
funded. We received$810,000 from the Neylands with interest and earnings and
other contributions come to $1,125,000. We have $75,000 to $95,000
appropriated for furnishings. We are getting where we need to be,but we are still
a little short.
4. We met with the engineers about evaluating if the Greenwood facility. As it is
now, it is 13,000 square feet and also houses the literacy council. We would like it
to move up to 15,000 sq. ft. The timeline for bond election issues has not been set
as of yet. There are still discussions of revitalizing that area as a civic complex.
5. There has been some discussion to align the City's fiscal year with the federal
fiscal year which runs October 1 through September 30. If this were to happen,

we would have to appropriate money for August and September including having
the new branch online with salaries and a book budget.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. The paperwork for the Big Read was submitted yesterday. The book chosen is
Fahrenheit 451.
2. The Children's Book Festival is scheduled for April 4. The book signing will be
held on April 3 at Waldenbooks.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Andrea Naismith had an emergency doctor's appointment. Barbara Silverman was
injured last month and will be out until January. These will be voted on next
month.
