HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 05/13/2008 RECEIVED MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF THE DEC CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES May 13,2008 CI IYSECRETP.R',"S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Silverman, Andrea Naismith, Mary Christmas, Sue Stanford, Lucy McCracken,Roel Carmona, and James Martin STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Library Director and Lea Zapata,Management Assistant Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:18 p.m. Roel Carmona made a motion to accept the April 8, 2008,minutes. Lucy McCracken seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. The Friends received$3,000 for the Big Read, a community wide reading promotion. The book selected for this year is Fahrenheit 451. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS: I. Mr. Canales handed out an update on the bond projects. They have earned $40,000 in additional interest. We have not dipped into the$87,000 contingency for the Garcia Library. WKMC architects are finalizing the furnishings plan. 2. Parkdale Branch Library will be closed until approximately June 16 for about 5 weeks. The restrooms have been gutted. The air condition ducts are being cleaned. The contract for$78,000 has been awarded for the furniture today at City Council. We are envisioning the official grand opening in August. The children's area will be 3,700 square feet, the largest in the Corpus Christi Public Library system. 3. Sometime this month the City Council will be provided with suggestions for the 2008 bond election. John Dykema has been asked to do an estimate with ideas for the Greenwood Branch Library. We need to hold firm to 15,000 square feet. It is estimated we would need $6 million but they want to put it in as $5 million. 4. We will give an update on the budget next month. It goes to City Council in June. We do not expect the cuts to be severe. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Michael Flores has been appointed to replace Dr. A.N.M. Waheeduzzaman. 2. Ms. Silverman is resigning from the Library Board. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Next month we will need to address the ordinance regarding the La Retama Club representative. We will get the wording for the next month's agenda. The meeting adjourned at 2 p.m. SCANNED
