CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES August 12, 2008 CITY SECRETARY'S Una MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas, Michael Flores, Lucy McCracken, James Martin, and Sue Stanford STAFF PRESENT: Herb Canales, Library Director, and Lea Zapata,Management Assistant GUESTS: Barbara Head Meeting was called to order in the Kaffie Middle School Library by Mary Christmas at 1:18 p.m. James Martin made a motion to accept the June 10, 2008, minutes with the addition of the guests' names. Michael Flores seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. The Grand Re-opening of the Anita& W.T. Neyland Public Library will be Saturday, September 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. Children's author/illustrator Don Tate will present a program for children in the new Bell wing. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS: 1. The Neyland Public Library renovation is moving along. The old air condition units were not specified to be replaced. They were fine at the time the project was under design,but are no longer working. The contractor will be working on replacing it on an emergency basis. 2. The Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library will be opening toward the end of the year. 3. The City budget was adopted in July and provides funds for the operation of the Garcia Library. 4. There is a meeting tonight at 5 p.m. with the City Council to discuss bond issues. Greenwood is proposed at$1.5 million, which will provide funds for repairs to an exterior wall, foundation,roof, and mechanical systems. 5. We are now officially participating with the Texas State Loan Star Library System. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Lucy McCracken made a motion to change the wording on the City ordinance relating to the Library Board to state, "There shall be a library board consisting of nine(9)members. Seven (7)members shall be appointed by the city council with terms of two (2) years or until a successor is appointed, and two(2)members shall be ex officio members. The president of the La Retama Club or her designee shall be an ex officio member with vote and the president of the Friends of Corpus Christi Public Libraries or his/her designee shall be an ex officio member with vote. The term of the La Retama Club representative and the Friends of the SCANNED wr N Corpus Christi Public Libraries representative shall be two (2) years. James Martin seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Michael Flores made a motion to excuse Roel Carmona and Andrea Naismith who were absent due to medical reasons. James Martin seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
