MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF THE DEC 0 5 2008 j CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES September 9,2008 CITY SECRETARY'S°ER E I MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary Christmas,Michael Flores, Lucy McCracken,James Martin, and Roel Carmona STAFF PRESENT: Laura Z. Garcia,Public Services Manager, and Lea Zapata, Management Assistant GUESTS: Barbara Head, Janey Cone, and Harriet Nelson Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:15 p.m. Lucy McCracken made a motion to accept the August 12, 2008,minutes. Michael Flores seconded the motion, and it was approved by all. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: 1. The Big Read kickoff will be on September 18, 2008 at Fire Station#1 on Belden. They will have copies of the books, CDs, Teacher Prep Booklets and Pamphlets covering the book Fahrenheit 451. The program will run through October. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS: 1. The Anita& W.T. Neyland Public Library had its grand re-opening on September 6,2008. There is still some electrical work that needs to be completed. 2. The Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library will be opening at the beginning of January. We are currently working on acquiring staff. The library is required to have a$70,000 salary savings this fiscal year. The Children's Librarian and Circulation Supervisor positions for Garcia are currently being advertised. We are hoping to have those positions filled by November. 3. The City Council approved having the Greenwood Branch Library on the 2008 bond election for$1.5 million for repairs and possibly some expansion. 4. The Corpus Christi Public Libraries is now part of the Texshare program. The non-resident library card fees have been dropped. We had been receiving less than $10,000 in fees. We will be receiving approximately$44,206 from the Texas State Loan Star Library System. OLD BUSINESS: I. The proposed changes to the ordinance are current at the City's Legal Department. They are researching to see why it was changed. We believe at the time of the change they were attempting to tighten authority. There are only 2 boards, library and human relations commission, who have members with ex- officio status. NEW BUSINESS: None. SCANNED The meeting adjourned at 1:48 p.m.
