November 11,2008
CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE

STAFF PRESENT: Laura Z. Garcia, Public Services Manager; Lea Zapata, Management
Assistant; Margarita Cruz, Acting Executive Assistant
GUESTS: Barbara Head and Hatcher Chalkley
Meeting was called to order by Mary Christmas at 1:24 p.m.
Quorum was not present.
The minutes were reviewed with no corrections recommended. They will be voted on at
the January meeting.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY:
1. Flint Hills Resources donated$5000 and HEB donated$5000 which will be used
for children's computers at the Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library or at the
Greenwood Branch Library.
2. The Big Read/CC Reads is nearly complete. A representative for the National
Endowment of the Arts attended the kickoff and was very impressed.Next year's
book will be To Kill a Mockingbird. Friends has approved the matching funds for
the Big Read next year.
3. Friends has set aside money for next year's Children's Book Festival.
4. Letters are being sent out to remind members to renew.
5. Friends is looking ahead to planning for the libraries l00'" anniversary.
DIRECTOR'S REPORTS:
1. The keys to Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library should be ready to pick up at the
end of November. The plan is to move in the beginning of December. We have
hired the Children's Librarian, Patricia Herrera. The opening and dedication is
scheduled for January 11,2009.
2. The bond for the Greenwood Library passed. More than likely there will not be a
building committee for this project due to the nature of the work being more of
restoration than remodeling. Discussions on acquiring an architect will begin
soon.
3. Ordinance 2-75 and 2-79 were read today at the City Council meeting. The
second reading will be on November 18, 2008. Laura passed around the STLS
bylaws to clarify the length of the term.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Michael Flores would like to be reappointed. Mary Christmas will not be seeking
reappointment. We have informal recommendations for Barbara Head as the La
Retama Club's representative,Ken Kellar as the Friends of the Corpus Christi

Public Libraries' representative on the Library Board. We also have informal
recommendations to fill the two vacancies. The primary recommendations are for
LaRae Riddick and Lawrence Jorden. If one or both are no longer available, the
alternates are Sherri Darveaux and John B. Keys.
NEW BUSINESS:
None.
PUBLIC COMMENT:
None.
As in previous years, there will not be a Library Board meeting in December.
