HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 06/09/2009 • ho RECEIVED AUG 1 71005 Minutes Library Board Meeting C1ry5ECREiggyS OFFICE June 9, 2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Michael Flores Herb Canales, Library Director Dr. Roel Carmona Sylvia Sanchez, Recording Secretary Barbara Head James Martin Larry Jordan Sue Stanford MEMBERS ABSENT: Andrea Naismith Natalie Rogen Dr. Stuart Elovitz Sue Stanford CALL TO ORDER Michael Flores called the meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion for approval of the minutes of June 9, 2009 was made by Dr. Roel Carmona and seconded by Mr. Martin. Motion passed unanimously. Friends of the Library Mrs. Canales stated that the Library Centennial event will be on Sunday, October 4th, at 3:00 p.m. at La Retama Central Library. Laura Bush will be the guest of honor. A press release will be issued in September. Director's Report Mr. Canales reported he is trying to secure about $75,000 in funding to paint the exterior of La Retama Central in preparation for Mrs. Bush's visit. He will also try to streamline the process as there isn't much time before the visit. Mr. Canales stated he will try to avoid using remaining 2004 Bond funds for this project. Today was the first presentation to City Council of the City's General Fund budget which includes the library. The book budget was cut by $84,310 this year. There were 1.5 positions frozen, which means these positions will be eliminated. Two council members questioned the library cuts. More discussions on the budget are scheduled in July. The roof repairs at the Harte Library should be completed within two weeks. The architect contract will be presented to Council in mid to late July. SCANNED IANNED INV Mr. Canales distributed the 2008 National Libraries Comparisons report. Corpus Christi ranks as follows: • 13 of 13 in square ft. per capita • 13 of 13 in total paid staff per 1,000 population • 13 of 13 in total paid staff per 2,500 Population • 13 of 13 in expenditures per capita • 13 of 13 in library materials expenditures per capita • 13 of 13 in holdings per capita In terms of usage Corpus Christi ranks as follows: • 11 of 13 in circulation per capita • 12 of 13 in visitors per capita • 9 of 14 in registered borrowers per capita Other Issues: Recommended entry level salary for librarian in Texas is $40,000; Corpus Christi is $28,144. The Assistant Library Director position was eliminated due to budget cuts nine years ago. Mr. Canales stated that the use of library website is not measured. Our website hits are approximately 15 to 20 million a year. The library website has local creative content with the online catalog and has the commercial databases. Mr. Canales added that the council is talking about going with a zero base budgeting. The library will fair well with a zero base budget. Old Business The following members: Mr. Flores,Natalie Bogen, and Barbara Head were appointed to the Greenwood Building Committee. New Business Motion was made by Mr. Martin to excuse Andrea Naismith, Barbara Head, and Dr. Stuart Elovitz from being absent at last month's meeting due members not receiving notification in a timely manner and was seconded by Mr. Martin. Motion passed unanimously. Board Goals: • Convey the need to the library—advertise, flyers, etc. • Contact Del Mar, A&M University to involve students to volunteer at the library • Publicity—civic pages, with other local agencies (county, auxiliary clubs, etc.) • Recruit more Friends of the Library • Teaching library patrons on using computers. Get volunteers to teach computer classes. • More publicity for the Centennial, projects at the branches, each branch do something special. Public Comment None.
