HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 07/14/2009 11.0 RECEIVED OCroszoos Minutes CI SECRE7gRy'S OFFICE Library Board Meeting July 14,2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Michael Flores Herb Canales, Library Director Barbara Head Sylvia Sanchez, Recording Secretary James Martin Lucy McCracken Larry Jordan Natalie Rogen Dr. Smart Elovitz Sue Stanford MEMBERS ABSENT: Dr. Roel Carmona CALL TO ORDER Michael Flores called the meeting to order at 1:20 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion for approval of the minutes of June 9,2009 was made by Lucy McCracken and seconded by Barbara Head with the following corrections: Sue Stanford was present, Mr. Canales stated that the Library Centennial event will be on Sunday, October 4th, and motion was made by Mr. Martin to excuse Andrea Naismith, Barbara Head, and Dr. Stuart Elovitz from being absent at last month's meeting due members not receiving notification in a timely manner and was seconded by Dr.Carmona. Motion passed unanimously. Friends of the Library Mrs. Rogen stated that besides the event with Mrs. Bush, there are 3 centennial events scheduled: • Murphy Givens and Jim Moloney, 1919 The Storm, is scheduled at 3:00 p.m., October 111h, at the Harte Library. • Kevin Hayes, author of The Road to Monticello, The Life and Mind of Thomas Jefferson, is scheduled at 3:00 p.m., November 81", at Neyland Library. Amanda and Ken Kellar are sponsoring this event and the reception for Laura Bush. High School students from CCISD and surrounding schools that are studying American History will be encouraged to come. • Patsy Pittman Light, author of Capturing Nature: The Cement Sculpture of Dionicio Rodriguez, is scheduled at 3:00 p.m.,November 22nd at La Retama Central Library. Board members agreed to write a thank you letter to Mrs. Beverley Wallace for securing Mrs. Bush for the centennial event. SCANNED 401 Director's Report Mr. Canales reported that the first reading of the City Budget is today and the second reading is scheduled for July 28°i. The book budget was cut by$84,310 and 1.5 positions were eliminated. Joe Adame, City Mayor,visited Greenwood Library and his opinion was that the library needs a new building.The library is awaiting the outcome. Mr. Canales stated that the council approved $77,000 to paint the exterior of La Retama Central Library and make other exterior repairs. The work should be completed by mid-September. An additional centennial program,the dedication of the Ice age era art work and mammoth bones, donated by local geologists,is scheduled for Sunday, October 18°i at Northwest Library. A copy of the Public Library Advisory Board Handbook was distributed to board members. Old Business Board members agreed to discuss - Convey needs of the Library - in next meeting. The following items will be discussed in future meetings(one item per meeting): • Use of Volunteers • Publicity • Expand Friends of Library membership • More classes on use of library computers New Business Motion was made by Ms. McCracken to excuse Dr. Elovitz(due to illness in his family)and Mrs.Bogen (due to being out of state) from last month's meeting and Dr. Carmona from today's meeting(due to medical reasons) and was seconded by Mrs. Head.
