HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 09/08/2009 RECEIVED NOV 1 2 2009 Minutes CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE library Board Meeting September 8,2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Michael Flores Herb Canales,Library Director Dr. Roel Cannons Sylvia Sanchez, Recording Secretary Barbara Head James Martin Lucy McCracken Larry Jordan Natalie Rogen Dr. Stuart Elovitz MEMBERS ABSENT: CALL TO ORDER Michael Flores called the meeting to order at 1:18 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion for approval of the minutes of July 14.2009 was made by Lucy McCracken and seconded by Dr. Stuart Elovitz. Motion passed unanimously. Friends of the Library Mrs. Rogen stated that Friends has solicited donations for centennial events and thus far over $8,500 has been received. Additionally, Amanda and Ken Kellar made a$10,000 contribution to continue the Texas History Series for the next five years in memory of Inez and Kemp Adams. Members received an envelope with invitations and promotional material for the Centennial events. Director's Report Mr. Flores stated that he met with the Mayor, Joe Adame, and they discussed the Greenwood Project. Mr. Adame suggested that Greenwood Library should get a new modem building. The $1.5 million in bonds would not be sufficient to cover the cost of a new building. Mr. Jordan inquired that if the Mayor had addressed the bond specifications. Mr. Canales stated that the $1.5 million bonds could not be used for a new building but that the bonds can be paid off. Council could also issue general obligations bonds. Staff is gathering further information and sending it to the Mayor. Dr. Elovitz inquired if library staff is working on a possible partnership with the West Oso School District. Mr. Canales stated that could be one of many possibilities for Greenwood Library. Mr. Canales reported that the painting of La Retama Central Library building has been completed. The lights in the front of the building will be completed next week. The landscaping will be completed in two weeks. SCANNED it The library's website will be updated to reflect all upcoming events. The news release on the Laura Bush Centennial Kickoff will be going out this afternoon. Ms. Santos Villarreal from the Parks and Recreation Department will be assisting library staff on all events. Old Business Mr. Canales suggested that having a working committee to gather ideas on how to convey needs of the library would he very helpful. Mr. Canales added that the committee can work with the reports that were distributed to the board members showing how the library compares with other libraries. The committee can review if the needs are effectively being conveyed and if there is funding to address the needs. Mr. Flores stated that the priority is to work on the Centennial Kickoff Event. Mrs. McCracken inquired that if the Mayor and other city officials are aware of all the Greenwood Library needs. The following are some issues that need to be address: • The roof leaks and staff need to move books for protections • Meeting rooms need improvement • All issues that were address by Greenwood Branch Manager in past meeting. Mrs. Head suggested that after the Centennial Kickoff the board can start working establishing a committee. Mr.Canales stated that the following would be discussed in upcoming meetings: • Greenwood Library Needs • Volunteers and Publicity • Expand Friends Membership • More classes on use of library computers New Business None.
