HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Marina Advisory Committee - 05/06/2019MINUTES Regular Meeting Marina Advisory Committee Monday, May 6, 2019 Members Present: William McDowell, Ron Smith, Martha Avery, Donnell Laux, Robyn Cobb, Richard Bell, Gerry Morrow Members Absent: Hal Suter, Mona Baen Staff Present: Gina Sanchez, Marina Superintendent; Leah Hughen, Management Aide Call to Order: Chairman McDowell called the regular meeting of the Marina Advisory Committee to order at 5:31 p.m. Action on Minutes: The motion was made by Ms. Avery and seconded by Mr. Laux to approve the minutes of the 4/01/19 regular meeting; the motion passed unanimously. Presentations and/or Public Comment: Mr. Laux briefly went over the North Beach Development Project. Discussion Items and Possible Action Thereto: Port Dredging Presentation: Dan Koesema, Chief of Channel Development for the Port of Corpus Christi, presented the history and the current dredging projects from the Gulf of Mexico to Corpus Christi inner harbor. Mr. Bell expressed concern for the dredging materials being placed on the south side of the channel in Corpus Christi Bay creating obstacles for recreational boaters and participants in regattas. Mr. Koesema explained the dredge material sites have been determined by the Corps of Engineers after extensive research, but he will take the committee's concerns to the Corps of Engineers. Tenant Association: Mr. Bell suggested tabling this item until more information is available. La Nina Update: Ms. Sanchez advised La Nina sank in the early hours of Monday, April 23rd due to a loose fitting. Marina staff and volunteers were able to fix the holes and refloat the vessel on Saturday, April 27th. Subcommittees: Ms. Cobb advised the Environment and Education subcommittee will be working on educational and historical signage to place throughout the Marina. Mr. Smith suggested an incentive for kids to follow the signs from each landmass and win a small prize. Mr. Laux advised the Corpus Christi Marina District Foundation subcommittee is collaborating with Texas Jazz Festival representative Patrick Cage to organize a Blues on the Bay benefit on July 4d'. With an estimated attendance of 350-400 people, $5.00 from each ticket sale will go to the foundation. Food and alcohol vendors will donate 10% of their sales to the foundation. Mr. Laux hopes this event will be a model for future fundraising events. Ms. Avery advised the Landscaping subcommittee will begin with cleaning up existing plants and gravel areas, as well as the Norma Urban Park sign. Ms. Sanchez will work on estimates for replacing Marina logo signs with the new logo. A second phase will be adding benches and shade areas to the landmasses. Ms. Avery suggested using volunteer groups such as the Sea Scouts for clean-up projects. Committee/Staff Reports: none Director's Report: Ms. Sanchez advised the Marina has experienced a delay from the manufacturer of the new Morf pier. Materials were originally due to arrive in April, the new date is June. Marina staff will begin assembly of the new pier in July to avoid congestion on Coopers Alley during the Etchells World Sailing Championship. The Marina will hold its first community gathering, a pot luck, on June 8"'. We are hosting the Marina Association of Texas annual meeting at the Art Center of Corpus Christi to overlook the Marina. Beginning May 9th Toastmasters of the Coastal Bend will use the boaters' facility on Peoples Street to hold seminars.
