HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Marina Advisory Committee - 07/01/2019MINUTES Regular Meeting Marina Advisory Committee Monday, July 1, 2019 Members Present: William McDowell, Ron Smith, Donnell Laux, Robyn Cobb, Gerry Morrow, Mona Baen, Richard Bell Members Absent: Hal Suter, Martha Avery Staff Present: Gina Sanchez, Marina Superintendent; Leah Hughen, Management Aide Call to Order: Chairman McDowell called the regular meeting of the Marina Advisory Committee to order at 5:30 p.m. Action on Minutes: The motion was made by Mr. Laux and seconded by Mr. Morrow to approve the minutes of the 6/03/19 regular meeting; the motion passed unanimously. Presentations and/or Public Comment: none Discussion Items and Possible Action Thereto: Meeco Sullivan Hurricane Repairs: Ms. Sanchez advised Meeco Sullivan completed repairs to several docks that were damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The repairs were paid for with insurance and FEMA funds. Morf Pier Update: Ms. Sanchez reported there has been another delay in the manufacturing of the dock materials. The new estimated arrival date is the end of July. Regatta Results: Australian teams, Havoc and Magpie, took first and second place respectively, and American team, Stella Blue, placed third at the Etchells World Championship. Upcoming July Events: Ms. Sanchez advised the upcoming events will be the Mayor's Big Bang Regatta on July 3`d, the annual Navy regatta, and Roger Creager's Coastal Bender Fishing Tournament. Committee/Staff Reports: Arts: Ms. Baen advised due to spalling on the sea wall ramps it isn't feasible to paint murals there at this time. Currently there is no estimated timeline for repairs. The focus will be finding artists to paint the AEP electrical boxes throughout the Marina. CC Marina Foundation: Mr. Laux advised the foundation will most likely be up and running by September. Then they can begin planning events such as a Jazz concert fundraiser. Culture: Mr. Laux suggested hosting a different activity to engage the community each quarter. Activities could include student art shows, concerts, potlucks, and dances. Environmental: Ms. Cobb and Mr. Smith advised the committee has several ideas for environmental and historical education signs to post throughout the Marina. Ms. Cobb expressed feeling the committee was at a standstill until a sign professional can give them input on the design. Ms. Sanchez suggested meeting with a sign company to gauge how much information can go on a sign and how to proceed. Park Development: Mr. Laux advised the committee is brainstorming a campaign to put benches along the t -heads with pergolas over them. The Peoples Street circle could be used as a fitness area, play area, or picnic area. A Dockwalkers program is in the works to educate tenants. Coast Guard Auxiliary would walk the docks to hand out safe boating and environmental literature. Director's Report: Ms. Sanchez reported Marina staff and the Columbus Sailing Association have patched 37 areas on La Nina and have had the mast taken down. The Seabin arrived and will be installed in the coming month.
