III. Approval of Minutes of July 10,2014 Brown motioned; Hayley seconded;All in favor
IV. Public Comment—
V. Presentations and Possible Action
A. MEND Program—handouts provided; Evidence based program provided through Nueces
County/Corpus Christi Health Department for children and families dealing with obesity and diabetes.
Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it! No cost to participants.Two programs with different target ages. 6-13
year old program meets 2x week for 2 hours. 2-5 year old program 1x week 90 minutes. Parents must
participate in the program. Offers education on healthy habits, exercise with incentives built into
curriculum. Take referrals from doctors offices, ccisd recruits, healthfairs, etc. Also offer after program
support via internet and newsletters. Presented by James Washington and Tanya Simpson. Spenst
encouraged group to approach businesses to help with incentives. Cook invited them to Kite Festival.
Brown invited them to get involved with runs and bikes for kids program. Cook Motioned for formal
partnership; Kesterson second; all in favor.
B. Collin's Lifejackets-tabled
VI. Business for Discussion with Possible Action
A. Tobacco Prevention and control Coalition Policy Support -Asked for support on getting
cigarettes out of parks. Talked about their adoption of Lamar Park and Butt Hunts with their youth
groups. Hayley motioned a Recommendation for Parks&Recreation to work with TPCC to develop a
policy to prohibit tobacco use in parks/park areas that used by children. Kesterson seconded. All in
favor.
B. Set Date for Goal Setting Workshop -look for a Friday in November from 12pm—3pm.
VII. Chairman's Report
A. Kite Festival Planning and Updates
November 8; Kesterson's class is helping with coordination of booth, activities, etc; MFC will have a
table with swag and commitment to health cards; Need to send out a sign up email for staffing the
booth
B. Proposed Initiative—N/A
VIII. Staff Liaison's Report
A. Fall 2014 Healthy Business Partners -Two submitted; Raquel,Wade, Misty and David subcommittee to
review.
