HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee - 04/23/2014 Senior Companion Program (SCP)Advisory Committee RECO'EIVED Regular Meeting April 23,2014 MAY 2 9 2014 Lindale Recreation Center 3133 Swantner CiTY SECRETARYS 0 Corpus Christi,TX Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:10 p.m. Roll Call of Members: Members present: Tami Longino, Isabel Odeh,Shirley Tipton, Brian Rosas,Shirley Selz, and Monica Rodriguez. Members absent: -0-. Staff present: Debbie Crites. Non-Member attendees:Sherry DuBois. Approval of Minutes: March 27, 2014 minutes were presented. A motion was made and seconded (Selz/Odeh)to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried. Public Comment: Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and address. They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following: 1. Make a statement of factual information, 2. Recite and existing policy in response to the inquiry; or 3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be places on an agenda at a later date, 4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program. There were no public comments. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action: Update on Grant—Debbie Crites informed the committee that the CNCS continuation grant has been submitted prior to the deadline of April 22. Annual Picnic May 7, 2014: Ms. Crites reported on the success of the Annual Picnic. She stated that approximately 160 RSVP and SCP volunteers attended. She explained that everyone had a great time and she believes this is the volunteer's favorite event. Health Fun Fair: Ms.Crites reported this event also went very well. The event was used to provide health information. The volunteers participated in fun events which taught them how the simplest things can provide exercise. Recognition Event—Ms. Crites announced the Annual Recognition Event is scheduled for June 26, 2014 from 4:00—7:00. It will once again be held at Lindale Senior Center with the Central Kitchen providing the meal at a discount price. Beyond the Call of u / anion of the Year—Ms. Crites announced that the nomination forms for both awards will be distributed to the clients and their family members. Nominations of those who did not win the first and second quarter will be presented so they can also be considered for the third and fourth quarters. She will contact Felipa Wilmot at the Area Agency on ageing to see if she will once again chair the committee that selects the Companion of the Year. Fund Raising Event—Ms. Crites explained a fundraising event that both she and Ericka Maldonado attended in Taft,Texas. She said that groups of people get together and decorate a table based on a book of their choice. The event is a luncheon held on a Saturday. The tables are judged based on different categories. Awards are presented to the winners. The event has been very successful for them. She asked the committee if they would be interested in conducting such an event. They said they would and instructed Ms. Crites to proceed with a proposal for the city to review.
