Regular Meeting
May 28, 2014

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:15 p.m.
Roll Call of Members: Members present: Isabel Odeh, Shirley Tipton, and Shirley Selz.
Members absent:Tami Longino, Brian Rosas, and Monica Rodriguez (committee consist of 6
members at this time). Staff present: Debbie Crites. Non-Member attendees: Sherry DuBois
and Stephen Isenhour.
Approval of Minutes: April 23, 2014 minutes were presented. A motion was made and
seconded (Selz/Odeh) to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried.
Public Comment: Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the
meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and address.
They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior Companion Program
Advisory Committee from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only
authorizes them to do the following:
1. Make a statement of factual information,
2. Recite and existing policy in response to the inquiry; or
3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be places on an agenda at a later date,
4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program.
There were no public comments.
New Business for Discussion and Possible Action:
Committee Member Appointments— Debbie Crites announced that committee terms are
ending in June for Shirley Tipton, Isabel Odeh and Monica Rodriguez. She stated that each of
them have expressed their desire to serve another term. The committee instructed Ms. Crites
to inform the Mayor's office that they recommend these individuals, along with Sherry DuBois,
be appointed to new terms. Sherry DuBois will be replacing Martha Wild who resigned earlier
in the year.
Recognition Event— Ms. Crites stated that everything is in place for the 2014 Recognition Event
schedule from 4-7 on June 26th. The Central Kitchen has committed to catering and gifts are in.
She stated that Ericka Maldonado will help with the event.
Beyond the Call of Duty/Companion of the Year— Ms. Crites explained the nominations are
coming in for both awards. Due to the deadline for receiving the nominations is June 15, she
will bring all of the nominations to the next meeting for review. She announced that Felipa
Wilmot with Area Agency on Ageing has agreed to recruit a group to review and select the
Companion of the Year.
Fundraising Event— Ms. Crites presented the timeline for the fundraising event and explained
that the Parks and Recreation Director, Assistant Director and Superintendent have agreed to
let the committee go forward with the plans. Ms. Crites stated that the best day for the Corpus
Christi Gym is October 11th. Therefore, they have secured the gym for the 111h along with
October 101h for decorating. She has also contacted the Central Kitchen regarding catering this
event. Ms. Crites announced that the information/sponsorship packets are being prepared.
She stated that for the event to be successful, we will have to get started as soon as possible.
An email has also been sent to the Mayor requesting her endorsement. She has not responded
at this time.
