HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee - 03/23/2016 Senior Companion Program (SCP) Advisory Committee Regular Meeting March 23, 2016 The Village Restaurant 920 Louisiana Ave. Corpus Christi,TX 78404 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at approximately 11:40 a.m. Roll Call of Members: Members present: Tami Longino, Sherry DuBois, Veronica Suniga, Shirley Selz, and Shirley Tipton. Staff present: Debbie Crites. Members absent: Isabel Odah and Veronica Marsello. Approval of Minutes: February 24, 2016 minutes were presented. A motion was made and seconded (Selz/Suniga) to accept the minutes as presented. Motion carried. Mayors Day of Recognition—Shirley Selz and Shirley Tipton were asked to provide an update on the presentation at Commissioners Court. They reported the presentation was great. They pointed out Judge Neal invited the volunteers to come behind the podium to take pictures with him and the commissioners. Ms. Crites explained this is the first time county officials have been involved. Shirley Tipton commented this sort of recognition makes the volunteers feel special and appreciated. Federal Grant— Debbie Crites reported the new federal grant is due on April 15th. Therefore, she will be working on it for the next couple of weeks. She pointed out this is a new 3 year grant and it is considered a renewal — not a competition—which is a good thing. State Conference— Ms. Crites announced that the Texas Senior Corps Association state conference is scheduled for June 13— 16. She will be attending. Fundraising Event— Ms. Crites reported the contract for the fundraising event is confirmed. It will be held on October 291h. Sub-committees were discussed. Ms. Crites pointed out committee members do not have to be on the advisory committee. Committee members volunteered to chair the following committees: Raffle—Veronica Suniga Sponsorships -- Sherry DuBois Silent Auction —Tami Longino Program —Shirley Selz Ms. Crites pointed out that the other 2 suggested sub-committees needing chairs are table sales and partnerships. She will contact Jeannine Leal and Loren Rock to see if they would serve on one of the sub-committees. Veterans Helping Veterans -- Ms. Crites reported the program is going very good. We now have 5 new companions (veterans). These veterans have completed all of the requirements and 4 of them are placed. Upcoming Events—The next events that need to be scheduled are the Spring Picnic and annual Volunteer Recognition. Public Comment: Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and address. They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following: 1. Make a statement of factual information, 2. Recite and existing policy in response to the inquiry; or 3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be places on an agenda at a later date, 4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program. There were no public comments. Next Meeting—The next meeting was scheduled for April 20, 2016 at the Village Cafe. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approximately 1:15 p.m. Minutes written by Debbie Crites
