HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee - 06/21/2016 Senior Companion Program (SCP) Advisory Committee Regular Meeting June 21, 2016 Pizza Hut Louisiana Ave. Corpus Christi,TX 78404 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at approximately 12:00 noon. Due to the fact the Village Cafe being closed when the committee arrived, the meeting was moved to Pizza Hut, which is next door. Roll Call of Members: Members present: Tami Longino, Veronica Marsello, Isabel Odeh, Shirley Selz, and Shirley Tipton. Staff present: Debbie Crites. Members absent: Veronica Suniga and Sherry Dubois. Approval of Minutes: May 18, 2016 minutes were presented. A motion was made and seconded (Marsello/Odeh) to accept the minutes as presented. Motion carried. Term Endings—Tami Longino announced terms for Shirley Tipton and Isabel Odeh would end at the end of June 2016. They will have to be off the committee for 1 year before they can serve a new term. Debbie Crites stated that she had asked Jeannine Leal to apply. Tami suggested Martin Longoria with the Nueces County Veteran Services Department. She is going to ask Mr. Longoria to also apply. Debbie stated that everyone interested in applying must complete an application on the City of CC website. Recognition Event— Beyond the Call of Duty nomination forms were distributed. Debbie asked that everyone get their vote in by the morning or June 24th so the awards could be distributed at the event. She also announced that Edna Beaty was selected as the Companion of the Year by an independent committee led by Felipa Wilmot, Area Agency on Aging. Tami and Veronica volunteered to wrap the annual recognition awards. Debbie stated year of service certificates are complete. She also announced Howard's BBQ would be delivering the food so it can be served at 5:00. Debbie will do an event program and the agenda. She will also be working on a game for the companions to play consisting of questions about SCP they should already know the answers to. The will serve as a refresher course for the do's and don'ts in the handbook. Staff will arrive at Lindale at 2:00 to decorate. Updates TSCA Conference— Debbie announced the conference was well attended and the sessions helped attendees learn how to deal with unsolicited volunteers in case of an emergency. Ms. C.B. Senior Pageant—Tami reminded everyone that the pageant is at 3:00 on Sunday at American Bank Center—Selena Auditorium. Committee members purchased tickets from Shirley Tipton and those not attending gave them to Shirley for her family members. Tami pointed out that she went shopping with Shirley for shoes and her dress. Public Comment: Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and address. They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following: 1. Make a statement of factual information, 2. Recite and existing policy in response to the inquiry; or 3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be places on an agenda at a later date, 4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program. There were no public comments.
