IV.
Committee discussed possible applicants for new committee members to replace
expiring terms of Shirley Tipton and Isabel Odeh. Those interested have submitted their
applications to the City.
V.
The committee congratulated Shirley Tipton for participating in the Ms. Coastal
Bend Senior Pageant and receiving the Ms. Congeniality award. Debbie Crites
explained to the committee, as per her supervisory in the future SCP Advisory
Committee could only use fundraising monies for the contestant's registration fee and
purchase an ad in the official program bulletin. Funds for miscellaneous sundries like
costume, makeup, etc. can only be raised by the participant or Advisory Committee
members. The committee expressed their disappointment for these limitations. The
unanimous opinion is that sponsoring a companion is very rewarding to the companion
and it provides positive exposure for the program.
In order for the committee to develop a plan on utilization of fundraising dollars
the committee tasked Debbie Crites to: a) get a final determination on dollars raised at
the 2015 From the Pages to the Table fundraising event; and b) provide a list of what
those dollars can be used for.
VI.
The committee chair reviewed the Recognition event and it was noted that there
was a shortage of food, but overall the event was a success.
VII.
The committee discussed the upcoming 911 National Day of Service project and
asked the committee what project it would like to do for this event. It was agreed that
the committee and volunteers would provide various baked goods for local EMS
stations.
VIII.
Debbie Crites brought the committee up-to-date on the status of the upcoming
Oct 29, 2016 From the Pages to the Table fundraiser. Debbie handed out the Save-
the-date cards for members to send out. Also, Debbie advised that she has been
working on gathering raffle items. She encouraged members to start focusing on their
particular assigned tasks.
IX.
Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the
meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and
address. They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior
Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and discussing their
comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following:
1. Make a statement of factual information
2. Recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry; or
3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an agenda at a later date
4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program
Ms. Pat Best with Harbor Hospice in Rockport/Corpus Christi announced that she
would be submitting her application to the City to serve on the committee and gave
suggestions on fundraising ideas for the committee.
