HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee - 07/20/2016 Senior Companion Program (SCP) Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Tuesday, July 20, 2016 Trattoria Taddei Restaurant 920 Louisiana Avenue Corpus Christi, Texas 78404 I. The meeting was called to order by Chair Tami Longino at 11:30 a.m. Debbie Crites informed visitors that they could only comment and ask questions during the public comment section. II. Members present: Tami Longino, Sherry DuBois, Shirley Selz, Veronica Marsello, Staff present: Debbie Crites: Members absent: Veronica Suniga Guest present: Shirley Tipton, Isabel Odeh, Pat Best III. On motion made by Ms. Longino and seconded by Ms. Selz, the minutes of the June 21, 2016 minutes were unanimously approved. IV. Committee discussed possible applicants for new committee members to replace expiring terms of Shirley Tipton and Isabel Odeh. Those interested have submitted their applications to the City. V. The committee congratulated Shirley Tipton for participating in the Ms. Coastal Bend Senior Pageant and receiving the Ms. Congeniality award. Debbie Crites explained to the committee, as per her supervisory in the future SCP Advisory Committee could only use fundraising monies for the contestant's registration fee and purchase an ad in the official program bulletin. Funds for miscellaneous sundries like costume, makeup, etc. can only be raised by the participant or Advisory Committee members. The committee expressed their disappointment for these limitations. The unanimous opinion is that sponsoring a companion is very rewarding to the companion and it provides positive exposure for the program. In order for the committee to develop a plan on utilization of fundraising dollars the committee tasked Debbie Crites to: a) get a final determination on dollars raised at the 2015 From the Pages to the Table fundraising event; and b) provide a list of what those dollars can be used for. VI. The committee chair reviewed the Recognition event and it was noted that there was a shortage of food, but overall the event was a success. VII. The committee discussed the upcoming 911 National Day of Service project and asked the committee what project it would like to do for this event. It was agreed that the committee and volunteers would provide various baked goods for local EMS stations. VIII. Debbie Crites brought the committee up-to-date on the status of the upcoming Oct 29, 2016 From the Pages to the Table fundraiser. Debbie handed out the Save- the-date cards for members to send out. Also, Debbie advised that she has been working on gathering raffle items. She encouraged members to start focusing on their particular assigned tasks. IX. Members of the audience were provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. They were advised to identify themselves first by stating their name and address. They were advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and discussing their comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following: 1. Make a statement of factual information 2. Recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry; or 3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an agenda at a later date 4. Discuss ways about fundraising for the program Ms. Pat Best with Harbor Hospice in Rockport/Corpus Christi announced that she would be submitting her application to the City to serve on the committee and gave suggestions on fundraising ideas for the committee.
