VI New Business for Discussion and Possible Action
1. Selection of officers for Tree Advisory Committee— postponed until we have full board present.
Sylvia Campos nominated Philip Christian as Chair; Ehlen seconded; Christian accepted;
all in favor
Philip Christian nominated Sylvia Campos as Vice Chair; Ehlen seconded; Campos
accepted; all in favor
VII Old Business for Discussion and Possible Action
1. Continue Review of Parks and Recreation Department Strategic Master Plan — Level A and
Major Investment Parks list
• Handout provided by Parks & Recreation Department listing parks and service levels
2. Draft process for developing Phase I of Tree Maintenance, Planting Plan and Education
Campaign
a. Tree Inventory
1. Ehlen suggested conducting an inventory of 7 main park planning area parks
plus 15-20 additional parks representative of the types of parks in list to serve
as a "sample" Anaya and Wyatt will develop this list before next meeting
2. Work with ITrees or hire a contractor to create inventory; app; program to track
trees (Ehlen will ask company AEP is working with what they will charge for app
development and initial inventory)
3. Once developed volunteers can help inventory trees in other parks throughout
the System
4. Subcommittee of Ehlen, Grant, Wyatt and Anaya to work on this initiative
b. Best practices
1. Anaya and Wyatt to bring existing standard, list of principle items team deals
with on daily basis; timeline/conflicts to next meeting
2. Tree trimming practices, augering, irrigation, etc.
3. These can be meshed with education plan
c. Education Plan
1. Subcommittee of Campos, Rodriguez and Weizer
2. Ideas for components of education plan —water wise plants, right plant— right
place, Master Gardeners, parks and park maintenance practices, code
violations (sidewalks and street clearances), cisterns
VIII Staff Liaison Report—Stacie Talbert Anaya
3. Proposed Fruit Tree Donation
a. Ehlen suggested storing them in wind rows at Solid Waste if we must take delivery of
them before we are ready
4. Review of Arbor Day Event
a. Campos suggested we do an event in November; Ehlen said they use similar events
as fundraisers in Mcallen/Edinburg
