V. BUSINESS FOR DISCUSSION/ACTION
A. New Business
Presentation by Danielle Converse
Danielle Converse, the City's Environmental Services Superintendent delivered a presentation on the
City's Storm Water Management. Storm Water System Components include streets, curbs and gutters,
inlets and laterals, pump stations, minor open ditches, major open channels, receiving waters (creeks
and bays), and major underground box structure. Storm water management has a dual focus: Managing
the quantity of storm water along with the quality. City has a total of 507 discharge points. There is a
total of 83 outfalls along the shoreline under the City's jurisdiction. To manage flooding and pollution the
City cleans inlets and maintains storm water system; removes debris at pump stations and channels;
sweeps streets downtown, at North Beach, and arterial streets; investigates complaints and inspects
and monitors sites; creates and enforces pollution ordinances; and provides education and outreach.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the City's call center to report any violations that may compromise
the Storm Water system.
*Cole and Ropes Park bacteria Implementation plan. There are multiple water bodies in the area that
are on the 303(d) list for bacteria, which means the bacteria has made them not fishable, swimmable,
etc. A group of stakeholders are working together to address the problematic bacteria levels at Cole and
Ropes parks. If any of the committee members are interested in getting involved, they can contact the
Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Foundation.
Update from Adriana Leiva
Adriana Leiva presented a prototype of the proposed cigarette butt holder. The disposal unit is
constructed of PVC. The committee agreed to make them more pronounced so patrons are aware of the
purpose they serve. The suggestion was made to use Schedule 80 PVC to help prevent breakage and
vandalism. Once the final design is complete, Ms. Leiva will email City Staff for approval and placement.
