Business:
a.The Visualized Concept Study done by Appelbaum and Associates and presented to the City
Council in 2007 envisioned a new museum facility with the Columbus ships as the centerpiece
inside the facility as a focal point for both science and history exhibits. The City Council has
now decided to lease Nina to the Columbus Sailing Association and intends to give the ships to
them as they implement their five phase project. Many aspects of the concept by Appelbaum
apply to the Museum independent of the ships. Patricia Drolet significantly scaled back the
Appelbaum concept eliminating the ships. Upon motion by Linda Torno and seconded by Tom
Kimes, the Committee unanimously approved the revised concept.
b. The City Council effectively changed the long term strategic objectives of the Museum when
they signaled their intent to give away the Columbus ships. As a result of that action, the
Committee reviewed and revised the Museum's strategic objectives during meetings in
November and December 2009. With staff input Rick Stryker proposed additional objectives
and organized them into a plan format which proposed a calendar for the achievement of many
of the objectives. After discussion and upon motion by Pablo Garza and seconded by Shannon
Madden, the new strategic plan was approved unanimously by the Committee.
