HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 05/06/2010 • RECEIVED MINUTES MAY 2 8 2010 Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History Advisory Committee Meeting CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE May 6, 2010 The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room at Noon on Thursday, April 1, 2010. Members Present: Jonda Halcomb, Kathy Juneau, Tom Kimes, Shannon Maddon, Jim Moloney, Scott Sutherland, and Linda Tomo. The minutes of the April 1, 2010 regular meeting were approved as presented. Upon motion by Kathy Juneau and seconded by Linda Tomo the absences of Shannon Maddon and Jim Moloney were excused. Business: a.Rick Stryker reported that the FY 2011 budget was not yet final so he could not report at what the Museum funding level. However, it will be less than 100%, likely closer to 90% FY 2010. Rick reported that the City's consultant investigating privatization and consolidation might recommend that the Museum take on additional tasks shifted from other departments. Jim suggested that the Museum might make better use of tour guides by taking on public tours of Heritage Park. The Committee approved a draft letter to the City Council expressing their concern and offering input into decisions regarding the Museum. The City Council will receive the proposed budget later in the month and begin deliberations in June. b.At the request of the Office of Management and Budget and in light of the apparent dire financial condition of the City, Museum staff reviewed various fee policies and suggested that the Advisory Committee consider the following changes: 1) Reduce free admission upper age limit for children from age 4 to age 2 Upon motion by Linda Tomo and seconded by Tom Kimes, the Committee adopted this change in a vote of 6 in favor and one opposed. 2) Reduce the number of free admission days from 14 to 10 Upon motion by Kathy Juneau and seconded by Linda Tomo,the Committee unanimously adopted this change. 3) Increase charge for birthday party attendees over the 20 person limit from$5 to $7 Upon motion by Kathy Juneau and seconded by Scott Sutherland the Committee unanimously adopted this change. 4) Impose a $7/person charge for rental event participants over the 50 person limit Upon motion by Scott Sutherland and seconded by Tom Kimes, the Committee unanimously adopted this change. These adopted changes will be forward to the City Manager for his approval. c. Upon motion by Tom Kimes and seconded by Shannon Maddon the Committee unanimously recommended that the City Council amend Ordinance Section 36-6 to allow the imposition of an admission fee for school groups. This will be forwarded to the City Manager for his approval. SCANNED d. Staff Reports • The contractor appears to be on schedule to complete HVA/C revisions on the North Building prior to June 1. Then work will move on to the South Building. • Museum staff will deliver the May 13 Friends lecture—"Treasures from the Collection" • The Historical Commission is preparing a contract with the Friends to complete the funding package for the La Belle inventory and storage revision project. The THC will provide $30,000 which the Friends will match with$15,234. • Eric Ray has started a blog chronicling his work on the La Belle project: corpuschristimuseumlabelle.blogspot.com. • Test message games for visitors will be rolled out after successful test marketing.
