Business:
a. Recent attendance has continued a long term drop in attendance, with 25,307 paid attendees
this past fiscal year- a 9% drop from the previous year. The number of people participating in
other components of Museum services increased slightly. The paid attendance trend had been
positive until April 2010. Summer attendance was abysmal. An important segment of the paid
audience, senior citizens, was down every month of the calendar year compared to 2009. The
Columbus Days audience in the fall was down significantly.
b.The Advisory Committee is charged with annually reviewing admission fee charges. The
Committee was given a complete list of fees and charges for their review. Per capita admission
remains higher than previous levels from the last fee increase. Because of the drop in paid
attendance it was thought that this was not the time to increase fees, even though Rick Stryker
reported that revenue projections for the fiscal year had to be revised downward.
Jim Moloney noted that the fees charged for publication use of McGregor photographs was
below market rates and ought to be reviewed by staff. Staff agreed to do that and will return
with a recommendation.
c.The schedule for Journey Week has been set for the week beginning May 9th, 2011. Members
were given a copy of the preliminary schedule for where and when visiting space scientists will
be making classroom presentations at various schools across the community. In addition there
will be three Family Science Nights open to the public at no charge: May 9th at King High
School, May 10th at West Oso High School, and May 12th at Calallen High School. This is
funded by Wal-Mart and the Friends of the Museum.
d. Staff Reports
• A contract for restroom improvements will be going to City Council in the near future.
• Jim Moloney told Committee members about his proposed McGregor photograph book.
The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
