Advisory Committee Meeting Cny SECRETARY'S OFRCE
May 5,2011
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room at Noon
on Thursday, May 5, 2011. Members Present: Pablo Garza,Jonda Holcomb, Robert Hatherill,
Tom Kimes, Shannon Madden,Jim Moloney, Luci Sosa, and Linda Tomo.
- Upon motion by Tom Kimes and seconded by Linda Tomo the minutes of the April 7,
2011 regular meeting were approved as presented.
- Upon motion by Linda Tomo and seconded by Tom Kimes, the absences of Jim Moloney
and Pablo Garza were excused.
Business:
a.Upon motion by Jim Moloney and seconded by Pablo Garza,the Committee unanimously
approved the deaccession and disposal of a variety of history artifacts unassociated with the
Museum mission or in poor condition along with a variety of archival holdings that were in
seriously deteriorated condition.
b. Collection Manager Ashley Henderson recommended the adoption of new environmental
standards based on the findings of the American Institution of Historic and Artistic Works for
museums. These are considered much more realistically achievable for museums and are
thought to be equally as conducive to the preservation of museum collections. Upon motion by
Tom Kimes and seconded by Pablo Garza the recommended environmental standards were
unanimously adopted by the Committee.
c. Upon motion by Pablo Garza and seconded by Tom Kimes, the Committee unanimously
recommended that the Museum enter into the proposed Service Agreement with Ships of
Discovery to provide conservation services for the marine archeology collection.
d.There was a discussion of some of the questions that might come up during the meeting with
the Visiting Committee reviewing the Museum for subsequent accreditation on May 26h.
e.Tom Kimes and Jim Moloney reported on their impressions of the April 20th City Commission
and Committee budget presentation. Rick Stryker reported on the budget process going forward.
f.Upon motion by Tom Kimes and seconded by Pablo Garza the June meeting was moved to
June 9a'to give the Committee an opportunity to review the budget impact on the Museum.
g. Staff Reports
• The restroom renovation project is completed for all but the public restrooms except
those by the main entrance. The project should be completed by mid May.
• The version of the State budget currently under consideration continues funding for the
Heritage Trails program sponsored by the Texas Historical Commission. That would be
good news for the Museum's collaborative marketing effort.
SCANNED
• From Earth to the Solar System exhibit—May 10 through 29— is a traveling exhibit of
high definition images of the solar system. It appears that it will be installed in La
Palmera shopping center rather than in the Museum. It is scheduled to coincide with
Journey week(May 9— 13).
