on Thursday, April 5, 2012. Members Present include: Jonda Halcomb, Kathy Juneau, Tom
Kimes, Scott Sutherland, Luci Sosa, and Linda Torno.
- The minutes of the March 1, 2012 regular meeting were unanimously approved.
- Upon motion by Scott Sutherland and seconded by Linda Torno the absences of Kathy
Juneau, Luci Sosa and Jonda Halcomb were excused for good cause.
Business:
a. Rick Stryker reported on the Museum's recommended General Fund budget for FY 2013:
Expenditures will be held to FY 2012 levels with emphasis placed on increasing earned revenue:
• A Summer 2012 advertising campaign will be developed to increase earned revenue
through an investment of $25,000 from HOT tax funds matched by $25,000 from the
Friends. Increased earned revenue should avert the need to make expenditure cuts.
• A S.E.A. District Task Force has been meeting regularly with City staff from Police,
Traffic, and Parking to identify and address the issues associated with signage, traffic,
and parking. The venues in the district are also moving toward collaborative marketing
spurred by the soon to open Hurricane Alley waterpark. It is thought that public event
venues (Concrete Street, Brewster Street, American Bank Center, Heritage Park
Whataburger Field, and the Ortiz Center) and tourist attractions (Hurricane Alley, Art
Museum, Corpus Christi Museum, Asian Cultures Museum) can collaborate on strategies
to market the area for mutual benefit.
b. There was discussion about strategies that will enhance private support of the Museum.
• The Friends have agreed to a special summer season pass membership
• The Friends want to come up with a fund raising event that will enhance local
public awareness and bring in additional private support
• With the help of school districts, coupons for free child admission (with
accompanying adult) will be given out to reward student academic achievement.
c. Staff Reports
- February's Land and Sea Odyssey provided discounted admission to 57 members of our
partner institutions and discounted purchases in our gift shop for 33 of them: These
numbers were down significantly from past years when admission was free.
- Rick Stryker accepted the President's Award on behalf of the Museum from the Texas
Association of Museums for a record of excellence reflected by sustaining accreditation
by the American Association of Museums since 1973.
- Members were provided copies of Progress Report Number 2 of the Lower Nueces
River Archeological Project.
The meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m. 2012 Meeting Schedule: Thursdays: May 3, June 7
