HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 01/22/2014 CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY ADVISORY BOARD Wednesday January 22, 2014 at 12:00 PM Museum Conference Room, 1900 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi,Texas 78401 MEETING MINUTES 1) Call to Order • Meeting was called to order at 12:04 PM 2) Roll Call • In Attendance Not in Attendance James Kunau Pablo Arturo Garza Amanda Leal Shannon Madden Linda Torno Scott Elliff—Ex Officio Dr.Jonda Halcomb Scott Sutherland Luis Cabrera Wes Pierson— Ex Officio • Pablo Arturo Garza submitted resignation. Committee recommended appointing Luis Cabrera to the Business Community Voting position. 3) Adoption of Minutes • Correction to October 2013 Minutes, Linda Torno was not in attendance, Shannon Madden was in attendance. • Motion to approve by Dr.Jonda Holcomb, 2nd by Scott Sutherland. All in favor. 4) Public Comment • No Public Comment 5) Elect Officers • Committee was asked who would be willing to serve as officers. • Chairman responsibilities include conducting meetings and keeping procedure. Dr.Jonda Holcomb volunteered to serve as Chairman. • Vice-Chairman responsibilities are to assume Chairman's role when unavailable. Scott Sutherland volunteered to serve as Vice-Chairman. • Secretary takes minutes and coordinates meetings. Committee thought staff should retain role. • Motion by Jim Kunau to approve officers, 2nd by Jonda Holcomb. All voted in favor. 6) Collection Plans Overview • Jillian Becquet-Collections Manager, responsible for high level of care and ethical considerations. • Deaccession List being prepared. • Development of"Hands On Room" underway. • Volunteers are cataloging Archive,which currently holds books and legal documents, like land grants and newspapers. Downsizing duplicates. Reference Library cleanup is next, plan removal of factually inaccurate and outdated information. Many items were stored at Museum when City Libraries were updated. • Committee asked what would be done with duplicates, whether other museums or libraries could use items? • Jillian will provide explanation and next action for items with Deaccession list at next meeting. 7) Museum Director's Update CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY ADVISORY BOARD Wednesday January 22, 2014 at 12:00 PM Museum Conference Room, 1900 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi,Texas 78401 • Positive marketing, 20,000 Facebook likes. • New educational theater troupe called Museum Alive brings history to life for patrons. • Many successful events being held and scheduled: — 1St CC Chamber of Commerce Expo & Mixer had about 450 in attendance. — Winter Workshop series,Thursdays at 10 AM through March. Museum history focused. — KEDT Food &Wine Classic being held Jan 301h, usually brings about 2,000 people — Mixology February 22nd, young adults, chemistry of mixing drinks — Mari Gras Event being held March 4th, organized by Junior Auxiliary Board — McGregor Gala will be held September 27th — Mayor's Conference being held at Museum in April • More exhibits are being brought out from storage. A new"Tolerance," exhibit will open in April. Currently working with Jack Rouse Associates, an exhibit company,to create better exhibits. • Science Master Plan under development, consortium of local energy players are interested. • 3rd Grant application for H2O exhibit has been submitted. Did not receive grant the last 2 times. • Ka Boom Community Partner Project provides playgrounds to worthy areas. CCMSH has moved up to finalist type level. 8) Items On Next Agenda • Deaccession Plan, Museum Management Agreement Extension, Attendance Numbers, Master Email List • Next Meeting, April 2nd at 12 PM 9) Adjournment • Motion to adjourn at 12:39 PM by Jim Kunau, 2nd by Linda Torno.
