HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 04/02/2014 CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY ADVISORY BOARD Wednesday April 2, 2014 at 12:00 PM Museum Conference Room, 1900 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401 MEETING MINUTES 1) Call to Order • Meeting called to order at 12:05PM on April 2, 2014. 2) Roll Call • In Attendance Not In Attendance Jim Kunau Linda Torno Amanda Leal Luis Cabrera Dr.Jonda Halcomb OK Smith Scott Sutherland Shannon Madden 3) Adoption of Minutes • Corrections: Date meeting was held, date of McGregor Gala. • Motion to approve by Scott Sutherland, 2nd by Jim Kunau. All in favor. 4) Public Comment • No Public Comment 5) Welcome OK Smith • Mr. Smith moved to Corpus Christi in 1933 and has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Del Mar Association. His interest in the Museum comes from his time as an "amateur historian," working with Dan Kilgore and Murphy Givens. 6) Deaccession Items • List of Deaccession Proposal attached. • Jonda Holcomb had a question about#2502, Ms. Claus in Rocking Chair,to be destroyed. Museum informed that there was no historical value to item, it cannot be donated. • Staff informed committee that most items on list are duplicates, taking up storage space. • Motion by Jim Kunau to approve Deaccession Proposal List, 2nd by Scott Sutherland, all in favor. 7) Museum Management Agreement Extension • Staff made Update to City Council in February. Reviewed performance of agreement to date, numbers, and attendance. Extension of agreement to council mid to end of summer. Original agreement calls for 5 year extension, council requested 3 year extension. • Most notable changes will regard position requirements. 8) Attendance Numbers • Record breaking Spring Break due partly to weather and good Museum programming (2013: 1,598, 2014: 3,168). • Committee requests information from Council presentation. Museum does not feel in competition with Aquarium, participates in exchange programs. 9) Master Email List • Update email list and send to members. 10) Museum Director's Update • Final Stage of KaBoom Playground. Request board participation in community conference call on April 11th. Will need 200 volunteers for"Build Day," if Museum is chosen. • Jonda Holcomb asked about Academy accreditation. Museum working on build out, licensing curriculum (for preschool program started by Carol at SciTech Museum), and investors. • Industry showing enthusiastic in showing support for educational programming expansion and summer camps. • Big Mayors Meeting being held at Museum on April 11tH • Tolerance Exhibit opening April 12th • Staff provided list of events through September, 10-15 events per week. • 11 weeks of summer camps, 4th of July Viewing Party. McGregor Gala on September 27th. • Other items in works: McGregor print expansion, NASA Partnership for Mars student imaging projects, Science Cafe at Hofbrau, 41h of July viewing party, McGregor Gala. • Continuing to work with JRA for development of exhibits. Different sections divided for teaching science, technology, engineering and math, a unique way of viewing museum.
