Business:
a. Upon motion by Pat Bacak-Clements and seconded by Mary Longoria, the Committee
unanimously approved the deaccession of mixed rocks.
b. Rick Stryker reported on the demolition of exhibits(Columbus was completely
eliminated as well as parts of the Sugar and Horse exhibits)necessitated by the
construction of Discovery Hall. Using a model of the Museum he reviewed the planned
revisions and development of new exhibits. He also reported on the La Salle Odyssey
Project of which the Museum is a part. Southwest Museums Services has been
commissioned by the six participating museums to develop a design for the exhibit of the
La Salle story. The exhibit will divided between the participating museums.
c. Consideration of changes to the Collection Management Policy was put off until the
October meeting.
d. Mr. Stryker reported on additional programming that was added to the Saturday
schedule. The goal of the programming is to create opportunities to use collections that
are not normally on exhibit in public programming and to make environmental exhibits
that are used for school programs available to the general public. These new programs
will be publicized through news releases, newsletter, and the Museum web site.
e. Attendance to the Museum in August continued to be well below last year while
admission revenue was down marginally. The closing of the Museum on Mondays did
not seem to have a significant impact since attendance was comparatively better in
August than the previous two months when the Museum was open on Mondays.
However, it is really too early to evaluate the attendance impact of closing on Mondays.
Visitor surveys continue to show a high level of satisfaction among visitors.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
