HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 03/15/2001 wt. 3a • MINUTES ,otic 7e27282„ Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History °'i Advisory Committee Meeting March 15,2001 , !; w A The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday,March 15, 2001, n m� Members Present: Henry Brennecke, Art Howerton,Kathy Heymann,Donna Flynn,Gwen ^ i Henzi,Joe Martinez, Tony Diaz,Lynda Falconer,Mary Longoria, and Alex Sadovski. Upon motion by Donna Flynn and seconded by Art Howerton the minutes of the February 1, 2001 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Art Howerton and seconded by Tony Diaz the absences of Gwen Henzi and Kathy Heymann were excused for good cause. New members Lynda Falconer;Alex Sodovski, and Joe Martinez introduced themselves and were welcomed to the Committee. Business: Before August, 1,2000, when the Museum began closing on Mondays,the Museum remained open on Monday holidays. Now that the Museum is closed on Mondays,the likelihood of significant attendance on Monday holidays is small. Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Art Howerton the Committee unanimously approved keeping the Museum closed on Memorial Day and Labor Day. b. There was considerable discussion regarding the education fees centering around the four session class fees. The proposed fees were an increase over the previous fees,but remained significantly lower than those charged by the Aquarium,Lexington,and Art Museum. Art Howerton moved and Hank Brennecke seconded the motion to approve the education fees as proposed. The motion passed on a vote of eight in favor and two opposed. c. Upon motion by Mary Longoria and seconded by Lynda Falconer,the Committee unanimously approved the deaccession of publications from the 1930's and 1940's. d. Art Howerton, Gwen Henzi, and Mary Longoria represented the Committee at a meeting with the Visiting Committee (David Dean and Ross McGuire)representing the American Association of Museums on the site visit to review our application for reaccreditation. They reported on a pleasant discussion where no major issues surfaced from the members of the visiting committee. We should hear back within the next six months. e. Rick Stryker reported that construction of Discovery Hall is nearly complete although the Museum staff's installation of the Spanish ceiling remains to complete. He reported that the Legislature is considering an appropriation of$600,000 to help fund the anticipated $1.2 million cost of the La Salle Odyssey Committee exhibits in six sites spread over five counties. Matching funding will be sought by the Committee from major Texas foundations and local matching dollars will be raised by each museum. The Friends have already raised $70,000. SCANNED fr+ • V Advisory Committee Meeting March 15, 2001 Page 2 Another exhibit project will be proposed as part of the General Fund budget due to be submitted this month. The 150'"anniversary of the City of Corpus Christi is in 2002. A permanent Corpus Christi history exhibit to be installed in the second floor gallery formerly used for traveling exhibits is contemplated. Under discussion is an exhibit aimed at the fourth grade curriculum which includes the study Texas history. Project components might include a portable panel exhibit that could go to schools, libraries,and other public spaces and a publication on local history that could be used with the permanent exhibit. Committee members recommended considering the development of a CD ROM program,the inclusion of oral history material,and the creation of a walking history audio program. It was also suggested that a more appropriate target audience might be the 3' grade where the study of communities in a part of the social studies curriculum. It was also suggested that third grade teachers be involved in the program development. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
