Diaz, Mary Longoria and Alex Sadovski. 'BI Bt.cd-iNi'
Upon motion by Pat Bacak-Clements and seconded by Tony Diaz the minutes of the December
6, 2001 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Art Howerton and seconded by
Alex Sadovski, the absences of Tony Diaz and Mary Longoria were excused for good cause.
Business:
a. The Annual Report to the City Council of the activities of the Museum Advisory
Committee and prepared by Rick Stryker was reviewed.
b. The Land and Sea Partnership is jointly sponsored with the Art Museum, Lexington
Museum, Aquarium, and Botanical Garden. During the month of February members of
each institution will receive the benefits of membership in all participating institutions.
This means that members will be admitted free and will receive a discount on purchases
in the gift shop. Members of the Friends of the Museum already have these benefits for
the Museum of Science and History. Hopefully, people will be encouraged to join each
institution to take advantage of this promotion and present members will perceive this
annual opportunity as a significant additional benefit of membership. Upon motion by
Art Howerton and seconded by Pat Bacak-Clements,the Committee unanimously
approved participation.
c. The fees charged for the various services offered by the Museum was discussed. The
Committee focused on the Admission fee schedule that was adopted prior to opening the
ships in May. At that time it was decided that the condition of the ships was not up to par
and considerable work needed to be done. So the fee structure that was adopted at that
time amounted to a re-implementation of the fee structure that was in place from 1995
through the closing of the ships in 1999. This provided a very slim revenue stream to
support operation of the ships. The Committee reviewed the attendance recorded in 2001
for each component of the Audience (Adults - 22%, Seniors - 7%, Military - 2%, and
Children- 8%).
Since admission fees to the Museum alone were adjusted in 1999 when the ships closed,
revenue to the Museum had remained fairly stable even while attendance fell. When
compared to the admission fees of the Aquarium and Lexington, Museum admission fees
are much lower. Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Donna Flynn, the
Committee unanimously approved increasing admission fees to levels that remained
lower than the other two entities, but were closer to the same level. The Committee
recommended that revenue from the increased fees be used to increase the Columbus
Ships budget since the per capita income for the ships remained lower than before the
ships closed.
