The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, Mafib 7,2002'.
Members Present: Hank Brennecke, Phyllis Riddle, Kathy Heymann, Donna Flynri,$birley
Abrams, Joe Martinez, Tony Diaz, Lynda Falconer, Mary Longoria, and Alex Sadovski.
Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Lynda Falconer the minutes of the February 7,
2002 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Donna Flynn and seconded by
Tony Diaz, the absence of Alex Sadovski was excused for good cause.
Business:
a. The Committee welcomed new members Phyllis Riddle and Shirley Abrams.
b. Mary Longoria was elected Chair and Donna Flynn was elected Vice Chair of the
Committee, both by acclamation.
c. Rick Stryker presented the proposed General Fund budget to the Committee. The earned
revenue included an increase due to changes in admission fees already adopted by the
Advisory Committee. Proposed expenditures remain sufficient to sustain the current
level of operations. The list of facility repairs and improvements along with replacement
equipment that are needed, yet continually unfunded, continues to grow. After some
discussion and upon motion by Kathy Heymann, seconded by Tony Diaz, the Committee
unanimously recommended that the City Manager support the base funding level
requested by the Museum and asked that funding be found for top priority deficiencies,
especially the DVR security surveillance system and the measures needed to correct the
chronic elevator safety violations. It was the unanimous recommendation of the
Committee that priority be given to measures that would provide for the safety and
security of the Museum's principle target audience, school children.
d. The Committee reviewed the 2nd Quarter Performance Report which was presented to the
City Council highlighting the bolstered Museum attendance due to the Columbus ship
exhibit and demonstrated the ability of the Columbus ships to support operating costs
through collection of an admission fee.
e. The Committee reviewed the priorities developed at the February meeting and decided
that no alterations or additions were necessary.
f. Rick Stryker reported that work continues on the Sesquicentennial exhibit which is
scheduled to open in September. The proposed opening of an early phase of the Cultural
Encounters exhibit is not likely to happen as scheduled because there is just not time for
staff to devote sufficient energy to both projects simultaneously.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
