Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History
Advisory Committee Meeting
August 1, 2002
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, August 1, 2002.
Members Present: Henry Brennecke, Phyllis Riddle, Kathy Heymann, Shirley Abrams, Joe
Martinez, Pat Bacak-Clements, Linda Falconer, Mary Longoria, and Anna Peterson.
Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Lynda Falconer the minutes of the August 1,
2002 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Joe Martinez and seconded by
Shirley Abrams, the absences of Kathy Heymann, Shirley Abrams, Joe Martinez, Pat Bacak-
Clements, Tony Diaz, and Anna Peterson were unanimously excused for good cause.
Business:
a. Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Pat Bacak-Clements the deaccession of
a collection of New York Times Book Review's were unanimously approved.
b. The Committee watched and then discussed a video that explained the traffic and parking
study done in preparation for the construction of the Arena.
c. The Committee discussed a proposed plan to mark September 11"' developed by staff
after a discussion at the June meeting. Admission to the Museum will be free that day
although visitors can make contributions to the Coastal Bend Community Foundation for
distribution in the community. Replicas of the Charters of Freedom will be exhibited:
Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Visitors will be asked to
participate in a diversity survey where they identify the family name of their first relative
to enter America, their home country, and the approximate year. This will be compiled
and published in the Museum newsletter. Upon motion by Pat Bacak-Clements and
seconded by Tony Diaz, the Committee approved the staff proposal with one negative
vote.
d. Rick reported that the haul-out of Nina took longer than anticipated, but was done for less
that was budgeted. A leak that developed as the ship was initially being towed back was
caulked and the ship was then towed back without incident.
e. Coming up is the opening of the Corpus Christi History exhibit on September 7th to
celebrate the City's sesquicentennial. This event will be hosted by the Mayor and
Council. At the request of Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi the Museum is
exhibiting a model of one of the mini-submersibles that will be used in the upcoming
exploration of the Gulf
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
