Advisory Committee Meeting
February 6, 2003
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, January 9,±003.
Members Present: Hank Brennecke,Phyllis Riddle, Grady Price Blount, Shirley Abrams, Joe
Martinez, Lynda Falconer, and Sharon Brower.
Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Joe Martinez, the minutes of the January 9,
2003 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Shirley Abrams and seconded by
Joe Martinez, the absences of Grady Price Blount was unanimously excused for good cause.
Business:
a. The Committee discussed the best way to recruit teachers and develop curriculum guides
for the new exhibits. The grant from the Coastal Bend Community Foundation envisions
hiring three teachers to develop a third grade level curriculum for the Corpus Christi
History exhibit and three different teachers to develop a fourth grade curriculum for the
Cultural Encounters exhibit. It was suggested that, rather than pay teachers an hourly
rate, they be paid a specific amount for developing the finished product. The teachers
could be recruited through the various districts. A steering committee consisting of
educators from the Advisory Committee and perhaps others they select could work with
staff to help define the product and charge the teachers with their mission. The final
product could be both written and available in PDF format on the Museum's web site.
b. The Committee discussed the community asset that should be utilized for teaching the
Summer Institute on American Frontier Life. Some individuals were named who could
be used as resources. It was also suggested that resources such as historical photographs
and sites such as Bayview Cemetery and archaeological sites ought to be included as
teaching tools. Teaching oral history techniques for classroom use was also suggested.
c. The Committee discussed the policy of the Museum that objects on exhibit in the
Museum are not lent for exhibit elsewhere. There is a request through the Historical
Commission that the La Salle cannon be loaned for an extended period to the Canadian
Museum of Civilization. This cannon is a major focal point in the planned Cultural
Encounters exhibit. Artifacts such as this have significance beyond the boundaries of
Corpus Christi. The Committee concurred with the staff that such loans should be
honored within reason. It was suggested that the Museum of Civilization might be
willing to loan artifacts to the Corpus Christi Museum that might present a significant
benefit to the people of Corpus Christi.
d. The Committee went with the Director to look at recently acquired artifacts including two
neon signs, one a Doc McGregor sign and the other a Nueces Hotel sign.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
