Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History
Advisory Committee Meeting
June 5, 2003
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, May 1, 2003.
Members Present: Shirley Abrams, Grady Price Blount, Sharon Brower, Tony Diaz, Angie
Flores, and Phyllis Riddle.
The minutes of the May 1, 2003 meeting were unanimously approved.
Angie Flores was welcomed to the Advisory Committee. Nominated by the Friends, she is the
elementary social studies consultant for CCISD.
Business:
a. The Committee watched the video that was a sesquicentennial project of the Landmark
Commission with funding from the Texas Historical Commission. This video had
considerable input from the Museum staff so that it could be used as a pre visit video for
the Corpus Christi History exhibit and a shortened version used in the exhibit.
b. With the bulk of the school visitation completed attendance was compared to previous
years. Like in all other categories of visitors, attendance was down significantly except
for CCISD attendance. Attendance from all other Corpus Christi public and private
school was down by more than 50%. Attendance from out of town schools was down by
about 25%. Students from 55 communities have visited the Museum this year compared
to 76 communities last year.
c. The visitor survey for the third quarter of the fiscal year was reviewed. Referrals from the
visitor centers were down significantly. All other aspects of the survey recorded a
positive visitor experience.
d. A new type of grant was received by the Museum through the Education Service Center.
For this Department of Education grant expenses for the Teacher Institute are being paid
separately from funds provided in exchange for offering the Institute. This is not really a
grant with "overhead"which is typical of universities and is not really a grant designed to
fund programs which is more typical of the Friends. However, grants to the Museum
from both private and public sources go through the Friends. Since the Friends do not
rely upon such grants to support their very small cost of operations (overhead), it was
recommended that the Friends create a restricted fund for this type of grant so that it
might potentially be used by the Museum for minor capital expenses outside the Friends
normal realm of exhibits, collections, and programs.
e. There will be no meeting in July due to the Independence Day holiday.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
