Business:
a. Museum educator Sandra Linderman reported on the Teacher Institute in July. Funded by
a grant from the U.S. Department of Education through the Region 2 Education Service
Center, Museum staff presented a five day institute to master teachers on the Frontier and
the Civil War. The institute was designed to make teachers aware of local resources that
could be used to teach this topic in social studies classes. We received very positive
feedback from both the Service Center staff and the participants. We have agreed to
participate with the Service Center in a follow up grant project on this topic that, if
funded, could begin next year. We are also discussing with the Service Center staff the
possibility of offering some of this material in short workshops through the school year.
Next year will be the second year of the present grant. Museum staff will offer a similar
five day workshop on Native America and the period of European discovery.
b. Under a grant from the Coastal Bend Community Foundation three teachers were hired to
develop a third grade level curriculum guide for the Corpus Christi History exhibit. Ms.
Linderman distributed copies of the guide for review and outlined the plan to distribute
both the guide and the video, The Way It Was, to all (62) schools in Corpus Christi with
third grade classes. It was suggested that the guide be placed on our web site so that it
might be more widely accessed.
c. Museum archeologist Bob Drolet reported on the fourth annual archaeological field
school in San Patricio. This was conducted with the support of the Corpus Christi Area
Heritage Society who permitted the use of the McGloin House, St. Patrick's Catholic
Church which permitted the use of their Parish Hall, and grants from the Doherty
Foundation and the Behman Brothers Foundation. The co-sponsor of the field school was
Texas A & M University—Kingsville. Participants included university students
registered at TAMU-K and a large number of public participants who paid a daily fee for
the privilege.
d. There were two versions of the traveling exhibit Treasures, People, Ships, and Dreams.
The Museum obtained the artifact based version when the Museum was named repository

for the San Esteban Collection. Through the Friends, the Museum acquired a panel
exhibit version, for use at the airport, when it was discontinued by the Institute of Texan
Cultures. The airport no longer wishes to use it. Upon recommendation of Museum
staff, the Advisory Committee unanimously approved the deaccession of the exhibit for
disposal to the Raymondville Historical Museum.
e. Museum staff has proposed the creation of two additional historic house museums in
Heritage Park. The Sidbury House is already furnished as a historic house museum. The
Museum would use its decorative arts collection for furnishings, acquiring additional
furnishings as needed. These museums would be operated by the Museum and
maintained as they presently are, by the Park and Recreation Department. The proceeds
from tours would go toward the cost of operation and maintenance. After some
discussion, the Advisory Committee unanimously approved the proposal.
f. A discussion of the parking and traffic revisions under study by the Port in association
with the Ortiz Center was postponed until the September meeting.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
